I am titling this leg as "Guantanamera", or "Only One Tanah Merah", for reasons which will become obvious - my last heroic misnavigation.
Caught the Heathrow Express from Paddington, conveyed from Trafalgar (sounds like we were moving around a giant Monopoly board) by a chatty London Cabbie who reinfected Jeannie with a desire for a cruise on account of the dozen he'd been on.
Singapore airline trip was just over 12 hours straight through. We had the wonderful fortune of a spare seat after an american guy in our row jumped forward into the only row in the entire plane occupied by only one passenger - a pretty looking ex-male. By the time our fellow passenger worked that bit out we weren't giving his seat back, so he huddled in the window seat for the twelve hours. Jeannie looked very comfortable stretched out across all three seats (I was huddled in MY window seat supporting her legs). Passengers were walking down the aisle all through the night to gaze enviously on the Person In Row 50 Lying Fully Stretched Out.
Landed Singapore timezone dazed because we left london at 630 pm, flew for twelve hours, but landed next day in Singapore at 230 pm? Anyhoo, as the Scoots say, time to drop the luggage and shoot into Chinatown for a beer and a visit to my favorite TinTin shop. Chinatown was two metro rides from the airport by my expert map reading so we hop on for the first leg which runs through a station called Tanah Merah for the 13 stops to the next leg to Chinatown. The metro is airconditioned and the rocking motion very soothing so we relax. After half an hour Jeannie says "why are they announcing the airport? Crap. We should have gotten off at Tanah Merah half an hour ago because there is a two station shunt from the airport to the main line. By our calculation we'd been to Tanah Merah five times, (definitely not One Tanah Merah! Boom boom!), lulled by the efficient airconditioned train. It did explain why the entire train evacuated and filled every second stop though, and the odd looks from boarding passengers. We probably drove the train security camera operators crazy. "look there they go again! This is the fifth time! What are they up to? Is this an attack, or are they just dumbasses?
For the record we got to Chinatown and had a nice walk and some very nice Singha beer at our favorite people watching corner.
