Another early morning start in a jeep and we were well on our way to Periyar national park, famous for its Tigers and Elephants. However, before getting ahead of myself and telling you about the wonderful park I must fill you in on our journey there in more detail! So, it was 5am and dark when we loaded our bags and precious lives into this jeep. Our driver let us in on an Indian moto for driving, he began "You know in India we have a saying for the driving, you must have 3 things; good horn, good brake and good luck!" The two and a half hours that followed would showcase EXACTLY what our driver meant by that. Luckily we got there in one piece, just. After arriving we had breakfast at the safari lodge with the other visitors waiting to see the prized wildlife! Shortly after breakfast was over we embarked on an elephant tracking activity that took us deep into the jungle all the while listening and looking for signs of elephants. 3 hours later there they were!! A mother and her calf crashing their way through the thick trees and vegetation. It was a fantastic end to a long walk and much anticipated sighting. Nothing will bond a tourist group like some fresh air, an elephant sighting and removing leeches from one another's legs! We later visited some waterfalls and had lunch in the park to finish off a very memorable day.
