First off, there is not English spell check on this computer so do worry about the spelling mistakes and typos because i can hardly spell, i can barely read....
Cheap but Classy... Cheap but Classy, what does that mean? People wrote me before asking me about it or mistaking the meaning. So i am going to clarify what i mean with some examples.
Traveling is the perfect environment to perfect the cheap but classy philosphy. It is part of my own personal philosophy, along with some other things. While i am traveling, i am trying to be as cheap as possible. Almost every aspect of my daily traveling life i have put under the ringer because i want to travel as long as possible and spend as little money as possible. This is half the fun in traveling, trying to be as cheap as possible. However, when people are traveling, they are their own countries ambasators and i am trying to leave a good image of the US (Bush has already f***ed are reputation so i have alot of work to do). So, i need to maintain a level of class. Like my mom always said classiness never goes out of style¨.
Here are some examples;
Cheap. A perfect example is couchsurfing.com. Right now i am staying at a complete strangers house for free. Not only is it the best way to travel, but it is by far the cheapest. A hostel bed is around $7-12 depending on the city and country you are in here in Latin America. By staying with a fellow couchsurfer, i save that money and also, sometimes money on meals. At my current location, i get three great meals a day plus all the coffee i can drink and even sometimes more than i can drink.
Classy. The house is free and i am their guess, so i might not have to do much. However, Not only do i make my bed, clean the room, wash my dishes, and all other cleaning things, i try to bring back treats for the family. Yesterday, i bought some pasteries and other sweets back to the house and today, since it is Friday, i brought back some wine. Also, i try and leave as little footprint as i can behind.
Cheap. Drinking. Somtimes drinking is my biggest expense. But i always try and buy booze at the local store and prefunk before hand. If there is going to be not pat down at the door, i bring in a flask and i when i am at the bar i only drink the most powerful shoots they got. Now, in bar that allow it, i buy bottles with a group and split the bill.
Classy. If i go to the store and buy achool, i always buy enough for the people who says they are not drinking tonight and no more than a hour into funk they ask for some. If we are at a club, i am always sure give out shoots to surrounding people and the people i am with, i pass them plenty of shots (sometimes too much). This might not sound classy but it is a whole lot of fun.
Cheap. Food. I do not eat out at trendy, expensive resturants. I go open market cafes, local food joints, cheap cafes. Most of the time, i go the the market and get enough food to bring home and make something. For a two weeks i ate peanut butter sandwhich for lunch and dinner in Nic.
Classy. If i go to a resturant, i tip better than most people. If i buy fast food, it is from a local in the street. If i go to a market, i go to a growers makert.
Cheap. Transporation. I only take overnight buses if i can. This allows me to sleep on the bus and save on accomidation. Kind of like two birds with one stone. I ride pubilc transporation and if i have to take cabs i try to share them with people. Also, cabs i negoiate down as much as possible.
Classy. When i am on public transporation i always give up my seat to women, elderly, or children if they are standing. If i take a cab, most of the time i talk to the cab driver and ask him about his life, as well as, tell him why i can not pay much money because i am a student and do not have a job.
Cheap. Prostitutes. I have and never will pay for sex (i say that now but wait until i am 50). Prostitution is all over the world. Every country i have been there has been prostitution. Someplaces have more than other but it is everywhere. If i happen to go to place where there are some, i have no problem partying with them or alongside them. When they give me a price, i always say you need to pay me.
Classy. Sometimes i go out with people who like to buy their sex, suit yourself. They treat the women like meat, they call them b****s, sluts, and all the other bad names. They grab them, only talk to them about sex and are treat them awful. I, on the other hand, treat prostitutes very different. First, i understand why they do it. Alot of the girls have education, dreams, and motivation. However, after school they can not find work or work that pays very little, in which a couple nights of work is the same as they will make in a mouth. I hate when girls from rich countries go, ¨i could never do that¨. Yes you could, you just have had the chance to be born in a wealth country. Second, i do not call them sluts, b****, i call them ¨girls that are on the clock¨. Third, If the buddies i am with happen to be in the market for a girl who is on the clock and needs me to stay, i stay and talk to them. I ask them about their lives, dreams, and why they do what they do. I do not grab them, i look them in the eyes and i treat them just as if my mom was looking over my shoulder.
Those are some examples of the top of my head but their are some more and i think more people need to subscribe to cheap but classy.
