So we got up and headed to the Amtrak statuion to get all our tickets for our pass for the next month of travel on the trains across the states, as usual we were greeted with great helpful service and had to check it all ourselves!
Got on the train which is quite good you get lots of legroom and room for your bags etc. It took forever to get to NYC again for our switch to Washington DC, so thankyou to Chloe for my pillow - coming in very handy for sleeping, to Aunty Betty for the Deal or No Deal game - also very handy and to my Dad for the chess set he bought me for christmas about 10 years ago - it is now getting some proper use lol! We arrived at Penn Station and had to bolt about for out train connection with 10 mins to spare as the train was late so we eventually got to Washinton at 2am. We had booked a 4 person room in the hostel but got 8 beds and had to tiptoe in while six other people were sleeping - not a great start to The Hostel Experience!!
The next day was 4th July - Independance Day and it was great to be in Washinton Dc for it. We got up and tried to find the White House but ended up following crowds towards an unknown destination and we were glad we did as we came across the parade along Constitution Avenue. It was great there was lots of high school bands, floats and dancers and they had some guys from the troops who had received purple hearts which is the highest medal you can get in the US Army, as usual I had a lump in my throat, they were so cute! There was one nippy English woman beghind us though b****in bout anyone who stood infront of her, even puishing a kid out of the way at one point, saying she had been standing there for ages and couldnt see through people, she was vile, at one point a guy asked a woman to move and the woman was like " I am in the USA Navy its my day too, I only get to see my kids 12 weeks a year" we were like you go girl!! As if nobody is gonna stand in front of you at a parade, she was English aswell, its hardly her day! It was quite mayhem!! After we had a look at the Washington Monument, the World War 2 memorial which is really nice and has a pillar and a fountain for each state in the USA to commemerate the people who fought in the war then we had a look at The Reflection pool and the Lincoln Memorial. It was roasting and I got a hideous strap mark from my bag right across my front! Craig wore his kilt for the holiday and was in his elememnt with all the attention of things such as "Is that a real kilt?", "Are you Scottish/Irish?" and even having to have photos taken with people, I even had to get in one with some random people in Chinatown, it was well embarrassing but you know Craig any excuse to show of Scottish heritage lol! At ngiht we just tried to find somewhere to eat n have a few beers but as usual failed miserably and ended up having soup in an Irish Pub, it was ok, not a patch on J's! We also walked past a big black racist guy shouting about how black people shouldnt work with white and he had a picture of Jesus with 666 under it - really nice! At night we went and watched the fireworks which were amazing, we wished we had taken the camcorder as the noise was as good as the display as they all hit of the buildings and it was so loud!
Next day we set out to find the White House and found it quite easily, we had practically walked past it, its that unimpressive but we did the touristy thing and got the photos done anyways lol! Had a little walk about and caught up with som emails etc and did our washing and sorted our bags etc. There was such a rude couple in our dorm, they never spoke and he thought he was the big alpha male and she kinda cowered under him and they were always in bed cuddling and a bit more than that on the last night, not a great sleeping environment!
We liked Washington its quite nice and easy to walk about and lots of the buildings are nice except like Montreal, there are loads of homeless people, mostly old black guys, its really sad, you kinda get the impression that nobody is trying to do much about it.
After DC we were off on our way to Greensboro, North Carolina!
Thanks for all our messages, emails etc, its good to talk lol!
Lots of Love
