Hi Folks!
Just a wee update to let you know how we are getting on. We are still at our placements in Mtwapa and we still love it! On Wednesday we had a day at school as usual. It is getting so hot now as it is almost rainy season so it just heats up and up until it eventually bursts and it chucks it down. It doesn't help that knees and shoulders have to be covered while we are at the centre. I sat in on some lesson s and did my lessons with the little ones. I do not know how people ever teach 5 year olds they have attention spans that last about 20 minutes and I only look after 2 of them lol!!
On Thursday Craig went to Mikandani, the centre where the children go first for counselling before they come to us. Kirsty was leaving the following weekend so she wanted to go so Craig went with her and Steve and they went to the centre and then had a look round Mombasa. I went to the centre and realised I had agreed to take all 5 of the small ones and that Craig was not here but it was for only one lesson so I wasn't too bothered. However when we got there the sisters had decided that today was going to be exam day so nobody could help me with the young ones as they had to invigilate exams so I ended up with the wee ones on my own which was impossible to do anything as they have no where near the same abilities. After a while I realised everyone was keeping the same classes so I had them ALL DAY!!!!! I ended up just playing football with them but some of the older kids were finished their exams so they came over and stole the ball and upset Rama the youngest one and then they had a banging of heads so I had to give him a cuddle but the older ones moan that he is not a baby but he is only about 4 or 5 and they all wind each other up and in the end he ended up hysterical for ages but he was ok and had a nap on the classroom table lol. By the end of the day I was mega stressed and juts wanted to get away lol. The kids got the afternoon off to revise so I just left as the young ones don't have afternoon lessons anyway. One of the boys told me today that I "have a big leg" which was really nice. Also one of the boys asked me "what does your boyfriend do for you in the bedroom?", they can be quite badly behaved at times and it is easy to be annoyed and you have to keep remembering that what they have been subjected to makes them know about things they shouldn't and they are quite violent due to the constant fighting they have to do on the street. A lot of them are covered in horrible scars and cuts and it is really sad imagining what they have seen and been through. Later we walked home and I got off at the flat while everyone went to the internet or supermarket, its really safe to walk about but still a bit daunting, everyone knows why we are here as its not the kind of town you would come to on holiday so they are all very nice to us. My new fix is a cold coke on the way home from work, you would not believe how much I need it by the end of the day. In the afternoon we went to the pool at a nearby hotel which was nice but not even cold as its so hot, the guy brought us cokes in the pool which was nice and then we took stupid photos of us jumping in and stuff to use up Kirsty's water camera. Then we marked the English writing exams which were hilarious and made no sense, I know it's a shame but we couldn't stop laughing. Some people went to a Masi dancing performance but it only lasted half an hour and I couldn't be bothered going away out for half an hour so we watched Chris Rock as the sisters gave us a dvd player and it was hilarious!
The next day we got up and went to school and I took Class 2 for their exams, I don't want stuck with the young ones again lol although I did end up in a classroom all day. In the morning we did science and it was really hard as some of them don't even know how to read English so I had to explain every question to them, the scores were not very good when I marked them. In the afternoon after only a 10 minute lunch break for some of the bys who took longer in the previous exams we did Kiswahili which obviously I don't speak so just had to keep them quiet really. In the afternoon they did reading and had to read aloud one by one with one of the other teachers and while they were waiting for their turn two of them fell asleep and one boy couldn't do any of them as he just came from the street last week. It is such a shame for them they usually get sports on a Friday afternoon. I also had a look at the dorms today and they are quite good, split into sections where 8 people share. When they were eventually finished we left for the afternoon. After work we went to a bar for Friday drinks lol, well one shandy and a samosa mmmm!! At night we had a few drinks as it was Jas and Kirsty's last night and then we went to Legends which is a bar up the road and they brought you a half bottle of vodka and you just buy juice as you go lol. Then we got a matatu to a club called Tembo which was really cool and girls got in free yeha!! It was quite good and again full of prostitutes and also loads of old guys with young black girls, its worse than Thailand. Craig was wastd it was so funny he was booty dancing with this black girl and she just looked at him like he was in sane haha!! We left quite early as I didn't want to be too drunk and we got a matatu back and some guys got one and were muttering about Mzungo (white person) and being a b it anti social but they got off so that was ine then we got motorbikes back up through the rubbish tip. Then I had a conversation with Snoopy the dog downstairs to tell him to not bark all night which didn't work lol! We planned to get up to say bye to Kirsty and Jas but slept right till 9am , my longest lie in for ages!!
Today we have just had some breakfast, we found black pudding!!! We had a bit of a read and will probably go for a swim in a bit and to the internet. We are thinking we may go to Diani to the beach tomorrow.
Hope you are all well in Bonny Scotland!!
Lots of Love
Eva and Craig xxx
