We hired a driver who then brought 4 other people to our vehicle - and we were relegated to the back of the van. If you know me, I was not happy - I couldn't take photos from the back, I couldn't hear his description of our surroundings and I couldn't have him stop for photos when we came upon something interesting. I managed to glean some interesting points though Our driver Augustin told us this island's 110,000 population had 36 acres of reclaimed land. In 1498 the island was "discovered" by Columbus . It is kniw as the spice island, and the bational bird is the duck. Cannons still work - every 7 years the island celebrates independence from France and England (1974) and they shoot the cannons. Prime minister represents queen of England. Catholic Church built in 1800 2 public and 2 private hospitals Bougainville national flower Nutmeg tree takes 10 yrs to grow and produce nut- and last big hurricane the island lost 75 percent of nutmeg trees on island. Schools are run by their various religious groups but education is paid for by the government. We stopped at a spice shop and we had a pretty terrific talk by the owner that I recorded. We were able to drive to a beautiful waterfall where a local dived - see video. 1,950 ft mountain Vendome 8 types of bananas in Grenada Bamboo everywhere Monkeys are around somewhere but we saw none. Crater lake is the main source of drinking water for Grenada Two active volcanoes- one in sea ... Residents pay 15 percent vat on everything 150 percent tax for a vehicle that is used 100 percent tax on new vehicles Property tax 7 percent if under 50k War in 1983 liberated the island There was a sign we passed really quickly that said: "Thank you America for liberating us " but we were not able to stop and take a picture of it. Back to ship Dinner: we finally ate in the main dining room - the food was okay, like most main dining room fare on cruise ships - but later that night I felt really out of sorts... We did manage to see Rich's (the cruise director's) friend, comedian Steve Caouette - and he was really funny! And if you know me, I am not into comedians! After dinner we saw Tommy Castro- he has different bands on board so is playing various times on the ship. Then we saw Keb'mo - so many performances every day - I tried to get a snippet of everyone.. After his show we went back to our cabin to find out who won the World Series- and were able to watch the 8th, 9th and 10th innings. Go Cubs!!
