Hello all
Hope you're well? So we set off again (!) after enjoying the fabulous D-Day celebrations at Portsmouth - they were amazing, full credit to all involved - the ceremony was very moving, the red arrows were excellent as always and we went to a 40's style concert on the Saturday which was followed by a fantastic fireworks display.
Last Friday we set off to stay at Walnut Tree Farm near Bristol, it was just as lovely as it sounds - complete with fresh eggs gifted by the farmer (well, technically they were gifted by the chickens) We ended up staying 4 nights and for most of the time we had the campsite to ourselves, probably down to the near continuous rain!
Saturday we headed to Cardiff where we were seeing Elton John in concert. During the day we went to the Cardiff museum (not bad, main highlight seeing the new portrait of Tom Jones, for anyone who watched Portrait Artist of the Year - it was very good - the painting and the programme) Despite the on / off rain during the open air concert we had a good time, and some of the songs were amazing, especially the upbeat stuff. By an amazing coincidence I bumped into mums god-daughter, Janet, which was a lovely bonus.
On Sunday we went for a great walk all around the campsite - it's on the edge of the Mendips so was pretty hilly which was a good workout, although a low point was wading (literally, a couple of inches deep) through the cow slurry, but that's farm life for you! At least I had wellies on - James had hiking boots, thankfully they didn't let any poop in!!
Monday we spent the day in Bristol - a really great city, highly recommended if you haven't been. It has lots of waterfront bars and restaurants and plenty to see. We spent most of the day at the ss Great Britain which was far better than we had expected - it was built by Ismbard Kingdom Brunel and originally it was a cruise ship, but was also a cargo ship, took emmigrants to Australia and ended up as a wreck in Port Stanley for 30 years before being brought back to Bristol - the museum took you through each step and we both found it fascinating. We then walked up to the Suspension Bridge - it's an amazing feat of engineering - we had driven across and below it the day before, this time we walked across it - terrifying for both of us as we hate heights. I had to leg it back across as I was totally spooked! There's a local 'attraction' called Slidey Rock, see picture, had to have a go sliding down it, just for a giggle.
On Tuesday we moved on, we were intending to stay at Croyde but didn't like any of the campsites so we are between Croyde and Ilfracombe at a great site called Lee Meadows. It's very flat, again we are the only people here in a big field, and it has a big farm shop and a gorgeous ginger cat who sat on our laps in front of the campfire last night and was waiting to come in the tent this morning! Hmm, I really shouldn't encourage that as I won't want to give her back!
I will upload some more pictures, they will probably be upside down again - I can't seem to sort the issue out yet, plus it amuses me that you might all have to turn your heads upside down to see a picture of a grown woman sliding down a rock!! x x
