On the Way and There
Centrum, Netherlands
I am sorry that I did not get to post before this. Laziness or activity, I am not sure which. The trip so far……………
We were given an upgrade at Melbourne Airport, so we flew business class to Dubai. Very nice indeed. We were bought back to reality though, with flight from Dubai to Prague, although it was in fact quite OK. A driver picked us up at the airport and "whisked" us to the hotel, a beautiful old world hotel right on a picturesque square in the heart of the old town. We arrived just before 2:00pm and the man at the des, a spitting image of Benny Hill, in more ways than one did not think we should go to our room before 2:00, so he made us wait. The boss came back on shift and cooler heads prevailed.
Went for a walk, and ducked off to bed at about 5:30pm. I took two tablets and slept to 5:00 the next morning.
Prague is a beautiful city, particularly the old town. It is also a walking city and we must have walked 30 Km over the days we were here.
Kay has discovered beer!
Leaving Prague for the railways station was interesting. Our driver had been picked up by the police and taxis at 7:00 am are not plentiful, but Nigel Mansell picked us up and got us to the station in time.
Train travel is wonderful. Sit back, relax and enjoy the trip. I also discover the delights of a mid-morning breakfast beer on this trip with a couple of Budvars.
Arrive Berlin, a caught a taxi to the Hotel. Quire a delay in the traffic as the President and half the Berlin Parliament went through an intersection in convoy. I have never seen so many black Mercedes and VW's.
Berlin (German) street food is the best. Frickadelle, Sausage, Curry Sausage, Frittes and Doughnuts, all topped off with a beer. How good can it get?
I can't get over how good the train system is, The U bahn, the S bahn, the buses, the trams are all brilliant and so cheap.
We bought an all-day ticket to go to Orianberg, about 50k from Berlin, for seven Euro each, at that included everything for the whole day, not just the trip out.
We are now sitting on the train going to Amsterdam, watching the country flash past. Again very civilised, but the big disappointment is that there Is no dining car. Still the beer and coffee lady is patrolling the aisles.
We now visit the Low Countries (Holland and Belgium), so I will give you an update next week
