I thoroughly enjoyed the braai at Alan & Gail's house. Grant picked me up after university and we met Alan, Gail, Granny Rex and Grant's girlfriend Tracey for a wonderful dinner that consisted of plenty of 'braai vleis'. There was lots of red wine, boerewors, steak, chops and salad to go around. The best part about it though was seeing family that I hadn't seen in a while and sharing lots of laughs together, most of which were to the expense of my dad I must add. At the end of the evening, I retreated to Grant's room for some much needed rest following our "wine tasting evening". Alan & Gail are enthusiastic wine club members and Grant's palet was not being satisfied. We made inroads into a 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 vintage before we called it a night.
The next morning, I spent 52 mins on Skype to my parents. It was good to hear their voices and catch up on news in Aus. Gail then took me to the country club for a coffee before dropping me off at Granny Rex's house.
As usual, there was no shortage of shortbread, muffins, cake and apple pudding. I was in paradise! I had arrived just in time for lunch which involved some homemade lettuce.
Was great talking to granny as she baked for Trish's birthday. We also looked through old photo albums which was fun.
That night we had lasagne at Gill's. The food was cooked by her man maid Elliott. Caroline, Jen, Ty, Greg, Trish, Granny, Gill, Pete, Mike & Veronica were all there. Trish's 17th Birthday was a perfect opportunity to make sure I saw everybody! Unfortunately, Graham was away in Mozambique.
The night soon turned into day when Greg and his mates took me to a club called "The Manhattan". They ran out of beer and before I knew it, we were drinking cane and creme soda pre-mix! Novel idea to say the least!
At about 4 a.m we headed home via McDonald's! A bit of a post phuza tradition! It was at this time, where we found our lift home. A white mercedes pulled into the drive-thru! It wasn't marked as a cab, but we were offered a lift. After a bit of hesitation, we were shown a laminated card that read "Grand Cabs"! I thought to myself, "The card is laminated, this is obviously a legitimate organisation". Decision making is honestly stifled under the influence of alcohol. We got there in the end, but the wheels sounded like they were going to fall off.
I got back to Granny Rex's granny flat at approximately 4.30 a.m. She was disapointed, because her guard dogs didn't make a peep. I slept until 7.30 a.m and had breakfast with Granny,
Later that day, we had a wonderful lunch at a new Pick n Pay cafe near Morningside. We had a great time and the food was terrific! Granny then dropped me off at Granny Havenga's house. We watched Trevor Noah the comedian before heading to Ocean Basket with Barry, Margie, Granny, Grandpa and the cousins! I had the garlic calamari! Man, I miss S.A food!!
During our time in S.A, I tried a T.V Bar, Fanta Grape, Appletiser, Tropika, Big Corn Bites, Biltong, Boerewors etc.... We literally went crazy for the delicacies on offer!
The next day I packed before catching up with Andrew Hartogh for lunch. It was great to see him and we got on very well and discussed growing up, work, girlfriends, mates, dreams and ambitions in a short hour together!
Next thing I knew I was on the Gautrain to go meet Zoe! We were heading back to London, Back to the Real World!
Granny & Grandpa Havenga were fabulous hosts and they made sure that I was adequately fed and that my thirst was quenched at all times!
To be continued....
