Thought we'd better get a shot of the bridge (well what's left of it) at Avignon before leaving. According to the guide book, they didn't dance on it at all as the song says, but underneath it. Following advice from the book we headed for the village of St Remy-en-Provence - still no sign of lavender and the damn town was choked with people for their fete, so we didin't stop.
Hunger finally got the better of us and we stopped at a roadside boulangerie to get some cakes and sandwiches, which we consumed at the next town's little park. Carried on towards the Gorges du Verdon in the Alpes-de-Haute Provence that Sally had read about in the guide book - what a trip.
Stopped first to get a souvenir of the region - a pottery cicada (seems to be their mascot). Then we began climbing. Firstly the village of Moustiers-Ste.Marie, clinging to the limestone hillside (crawling with tourists). Then down to the lake edge to dip our toes in Lake St.Croix before climbing again into the gorge proper. Described as France's Grand Canyon, it lived up to its name. At 1200 metres at the summit, it was quite something to see the tiny river below. It reminded us a bit of Croatia. After all the photo stops it took us most of the afternoon to get through the entire gorge, including Ian's attempt to throw Tom off the bridge. Finally arrived at our accomodation in Draguignan in time for a dip in the pool and a relaxing buffet.
