Day 8 Sunday 29th June
Boodjamulla NP
Up at daybreak.....which isn't that early at this time of year. (It gets light just before 7, and the sun doesn't come up until about 30 mins later!). It was quite cool and windy. We took the paddles back at 8am and soon after, set off for the walk to the Upper Gorge lookout. This 7km return walk takes you to the top of the escarpment enabling great views. Once back down from the escarpment, this circular walk goes part of the way along the river bank and past the falls where we swam yesterday afternoon, but it was too cool this morning so we didn't venture in. The track then climbs again to another lookout over the lower gorge and then down a steep path and eventually back to camp.
We got back around 11.30 am. We had coffee and Albie and Eleanor, the campers we met at Miyumbah had arrived and stopped by to say "hello". We then spent a relaxing few hours, using the internet, having lunch, chatting to some other campers, and then we had another short late afternoon walk to the 'Cascades'. This area (as well as the area by the falls) has a fascinating type of rock formation called 'tufa', which is a porous, brittle rock formed over time when the lime-rich waters of the creek evaporates leaving calcium carbonate, or calcite, deposits.
Unfortunately, lower than usual water levels, meant that the 'cascades' were not flowing, but the area is still fascinating especially since the walk passes through part of the creek normally covered by water in the wet season, and shows lots of evidence of where the flowing water has felled trees and deposited debris.
Back at camp we used our solar showers again, then Albie and Eleanor joined us for happy hour. We had a late-ish dinner, washed up and went to bed.
It hasn't been a particularly hot day.....lower temperatures that usual, apparently! Pleasant enough though.
