Day 13 Friday July 4th
Karumba Sunset Caravan Park
My fears about noise late into the night were unfounded, and we even slept late........didn't wake until 7.15 am! (Probably due to the fact that we had closed our blinds to block out caravan park lights and so did not stir at first light).
Our camper-trailer neighbours packed up and left this morning after only arriving late yesterday afternoon. We now have a caravan next to us. Folk from Victoria, who, like most others here, have come for 2 months. (Some stay even longer.....on the same site each year!). We feel a bit like interlopers......well we already feel 'odd' because we don't have a boat).
Today has been very leisurely. We had a cooked breakfast and ate it while watching everyone, (well those we could see), hitch up their boat trailers, get all their fishing gear organised, and head off to (hopefully) catch 'the big one'!
We then walked into the 'township' (we are staying at the 'point'), along a 3.8km walking track, (one way), which was only opened by the Premier of Queensland in May last year. This track meandered through wetlands....which are not 'wet' at this time of year, although at a couple of points we crossed a stream.....with bridges over them, of course. (This is croc territory, after all)
We stayed in town long enough to have a coffee and then we walked back again.
This was when we met our new neighbours.....they have taken hours, (that's no exaggeration ), to set up their site.
After lunch we pottered about a bit and then drove back into town to do some shopping and to get fuel. The latter we obtained at the large fuel terminal near Karumba port. The price was not much dearer than at home, which was good since we also filled our four x 20L Jerry cans....we are taking the Burke Developmental road tomorrow .....around 600km gravel road with no fuel available....... we want to be sure we have enough!!
The remainder of the afternoon was very relaxing, and once again we headed to the beach to watch the sunset, which was rather better than last night, and featured a pair of pelicans!
Back at camp we cooked and ate dinner, washed up, used the WiFi and then went to bed.
We are back on the road again tomorrow.
