Day 23 Monday 14th July
Cape Tribulation
It rained in the night! Several brief showers. This is the first rain that we have had, since leaving home a little over 3 weeks ago!
By morning it had stopped and we took our cup of tea down to the beach....it was too cloudy for the sunrise.
We had a cooked breakfast and by then the rain had started again.....a heavier shower this time. I am feeling sorry for the people camped in very tiny tents.....some of them left stuff out during the night, and of course, it is wet. There is a very nice camp kitchen here and a lot of people are huddled in there already! We can't change the weather, but this is a place that is ideally visited in good weather; but it is,after all,a rainforest!
The rain stopped and we ventured out. We drove a few km north to the start of the, 4WD only, Bloomfield Track, which we used to get to Cooktown four years ago, prior to our Cape York trip. It was rather muddy because of the rain but the first creek crossing was no problem because the water level was quite low. Then we started south again and called in at Cape Tribulation beach, which doesn't look quite so pretty in the drizzle and with choppy water!!! Another few km on we had coffee at Thornton Beach kiosk and we were able to pick up a weak phone signal here. The rain had stopped by now, although it was still cloudy. We headed back to camp having decided against a river cruise/ cruise to the reef.
After lunch we had a pleasant hour-long walk on the beach, always keeping our eye on the clouds. At one point we thought we might not make it back before some some heavy rain, but fortunately these clouds passed over and it did not rain for the rest of the day. It was quite windy though, with rough seas and I was feeling sorry for the 25 or so people I had seen going out on the 'Reef Explorer' boat at around 1pm.
After a relaxing afternoon we headed to the bar for a drink and to order pizza. The latter was delicious; really good pizza.
Once again, lots of travellers arrived in campervans, just on dusk, but there was no noise and it was a pleasant evening.
