Before we got to start our campervan adventure driving along the Great Ocean Road, we of course, experienced another hiccup in Melbourne. On Friday evening it started to rain - heavily. We had planned to venture out with some girls we had met in our hostel but none of us fancied walking around in it. We agreed we'd wait until it had stopped and then we'd head out. Whilst sitting in our room, all the lights went out. The rain continued and it became obvious it wasn't going to stop any time soon. We went downstairs to fnd out what was going on, we were told the power was out and would not be back on until at least the next day, the basement has basically flooded and the electric box was down there, meaning the whole building was out. Ok, we thought, not great but we'll deal with it - then it dawned on us that we had no food for dinner, the kitchen is also in the basement so our food was out of bounds, as was all the cooking appliances. So we all had to head out into the rain to find something to eat!
After that evening, the following day we were looking forward to finding out what was happening and when the power would be back on. This was now Saturday morning, we were told that there wouldn't be any power until AT LEAST Tuesday/Wednesday. We would be gone by then and the thought of spending two days with no power wasn't really ideal. The power we could handle, it was just the cold showers! We had dealt with them in Thailand, but it was humid there, you could put up with a cold shower. But when it was cold and raining outside, cold showers didn't really appeal. We were told we could stay at the hostel 'at our own risk' - meaning that we could stay but couldn't sue them if we hurt ourselves. They had no working fire alarm or emergency lighting, but we had no choice but to stay and we were leaving on Monday anyway. We had to go to an internet cafe to charge our phones and cameras, everywhere else in the area was completely unaffected by the water, just our hostel!
So it was safe to say, we were definately looking forward to getting our campervan even more so than ever now...
