So, today is the day. Typically, I've left a ton of things to do last minute so I had to whizz around Bristol on my last morning picking up my prescription, getting my anti malarials and getting mosquito repellant. We then decided to meet at Charlottes flat to grab a quick lunch and repack our bags - I doled out vacuum bags to the other two who were then able to pack all the clothes they had wanted to take.
When Tom finished work at midday, he came to pick me up and we went in convoy to the airport. My stomach was filled with butterflies and I was already getting emotional about leaving Tom behind. He was surprisingly upbeat and was trying to remain positive. To be honest, I think he didn't want the embarrassment of tears at the airport!
On arrival at Heathrow, we successfully checked in and all grabbed some tea from Cafe Nero before saying our final goodbyes. This was 100 times more difficult than I had ever imagined this moment to be as I instantly started crying as I clung onto Tom. After disengaging myself from him after 5 minutes, Charlotte and I gripped each other's arms as we walked through security, with her having just said goodbye to Ali as well. Gemma watched on in awkward amusement as she had already said her goodbyes to Alex at home.
Our flights were relatively uneventful until we hit turbulence and the captain made an announcement for all crew to sit down. This was pretty scary as it was swiftly followed by some of the worst turbulence I've felt as we seemed to plummet for several seconds. I was s***ting myself, but as Charlotte looked like she was bricking it on an entirely different level, mother hen mode came out and I spent the next couple of minutes calming her down (and me internally!)
Before arriving into Abu Dhabi, a further announcement was made that as the country actively followed Ramadan, that no food or water could be consumed during sunlight hours. We looked out the window to see that the sun was rising. Unfortunately, we all simultaneously had our breakfast hunger pangs. Fortunately, we found a cafe selling food in our departure lounge and thought that if it was serving food, we could purchase it? Our stomachs decided for us and we quickly bought 3 croissants, found a hidden corner and discreetly scoffed them down. We were then ready to board our second flight to Bangkok.
