Everyone knows that dogs are the best animals ever and if you doubt that.... well, we just should not go there! Today, we had an incredible "find" in Gunsan, a town about 20 minutes south of us in Jeolla province.
Yesterday, a friend of mine told me about a Sheep cafe in Seoul (yes, a cafe where you can sip coffee and pet sheep and lambs) ... that piqued my interest to say the least... I won't tell you about the squealing that ensued after I found pictures on the internet. That got me thinking.. are there more of these "cafes" around Korea? Further research led me to find a Cat Cafe and then.... the Holy Grail.... a Dog Cafe!
Upon locating the address and busniess hours of this cult of cuteness, I knew what MUST be done, an immediate trip! We did take a small detour out the beach near my rural school. The tide goes out and there is a path to an island that is walkable for a few hours each day. But, enough about that, we are here to talk about dogs!
Everyone who knows me understands that I melt in the presence of anything cute and cuddly and this was no exception. We located the building with relative ease, usually this is not the case in Korea. Bounding up the four flights of stairs with excitement we were met with a cluster of canines eager to meet us. The barking reminded me of pulling into the driveway at my father's house. There were about 10 dogs in total, each a different breed. I nearly cried when I saw the Cocker Spaniel.... my heart grew 5 sizes!!
We paid 5,000won each (about 5 bucks) and that included a drink. They had fabulous iced tea with just a hint of peach flavor. We took a seat on the spacious outdoor patio and the dogs flocked to us. When the sun became a bit too much, we headed inside and I plopped down on the floor and Jesse found a nice chair. All the dogs were friendly and the cafe did not have the "smell" that one associates with many animals in a space.
We stayed for about and hour and half, cuddling each little pup. There was even a lab who stepped on me and sat his big 42 kilo self right on my lap....Just like home! If you can't have a dog of your own, this is a great alternative to get in your "fix" of Fido. I left happy and hair covered. This was, by far, the best "club" I have ever been to. I am calling it that because there was a cover charge and a free drink... but no manky guys trying to get you to go home with them! Just a bunch of perfect poochies looking for a scratch behind the ears.
