Well, this is our first post as a married couple! It feels a bit surreal to be married, but I am sure we will get used to it.
I know you are wondering, the wedding was spectacular! All of the passengers on the boat were absolutely lovely to us. Not to mention the crew, they were amazing! We had no less than four wedding cakes, decorations, paper flowers (no flora or fauna from other places allowed) and to top it off, a 200- year old chunk of ice from an over turned iceberg. The Captain married us in the Neumayer Channel, a small cove surrounded by glaciers. As we said "I do" penguins played on the passing icebergs, jumping in and out of the water. Two white birds that had followed our boat from Port Lockroy sat on the railing for the entire wedding. The Weddell Seals could not be bothered to stop sleeping to attend, can't blame them, I love sleep as well!
After the short ceremony, we posed for pictures and hugged nearly every person on the boat.... so warm! The crew had prepared an Argentine asado for us. We started with choripan, a sausage nestled in a small baguette topped with chimichuri.... heavenly! We then went into dinner and our table was decorated with "rose napkins"- such a nice touch. After a lovely piece of meat topped with more spicy sauce we ventured into the common room only to see FOUR giant wedding cakes and an ice "sculpture". (as far as I am concerned, nature makes the best sculptures) We cut into the cake and fed each other in true style... meaning I got cake on my nose thanks to my new husband! Then, the drinking and dancing ensued... what a night! I had always envisioned my wedding as a reserved celebration with a little slow dancing.... this was NOT that. It was a thousand times better!!!! Popular pop music pulsed as we jumped all over the boat. We even did the Macarena- throw back to the 90's if you will. I learned a new dance courtesy of the lovely Tamara, our boats' bartender turned makeshift mother when we were not feeling well. Seriously, this woman kept a smile on her face even when she was cleaning up vomit. Hardcore lady right there. Anyways, back to the reception. Honestly, this was better than anything I had ever imagined. When you think about how something COULD be in your mind when you are planning it, you think about the things that could go wrong as well. But, I was absolutely blown away by how amazing it all was. The crew, passengers and expedition staff all came together and just partied the night away. It makes me tear-up to think about it again. You bring so many people of different nationalities together and instead of focusing on differences, language barriers and cultural norms they came together. It thought the boat was a bit divided before, but to see everyone engaged together, it was magical. I could not have asked for a better wedding celebration. To be in a place of vast, stunningly beautiful yet stark, unfriendly territory, this wedding was filled with warmth and love.
We went to the end of the earth and said I do...
