Erica's travels through Eastern Europe and Russia
Krakow, Poland - I've just arrived in Krakow after quite an adventurous journey from Prague. I spent a relaxing night in Prague, but I've been there a few times When I bought my Prague - Krakow train ticket, I thought it was a direct journey. While the ticket says Praha - Krakow, it really doesn't go straight there.
I leave the train station and ask the businessman next to me whether the Krakow stop will be next. It won't actually, because this train's next stop is Warsaw. Warsaw is 5 hours from Krakow, so I won't be able to make the hostel I've reserved tonight. The businessman is uber nice and tries to help me with his laptop, but alas the train stops and the conductor escorts me off. I'm excited because I'm generally (1.5 hours) from Krakow (rather than 5).
The train stops at Zawiercie (a small, small town) and no one speaks *any* english. I come to the ticket booth, and try to get a ticket to the 18.22 train to Krakow, but they wouldn't accept charge cards. There's 5 minutes until the train comes, and I can't get a ticket with no Polish PLNs (all I've got is EUROS and US$). I ask the ticket booth when the next train is and she replies - no more trains to Krakow. I freak out. I'm in some podunk town with only taxis, potentially no hostels, hotels, and the sun is setting.
I think about what I might do in Romania. Bribery! I run to the train terminal, and ask where the train is to Krakow. After being recommended two different terminals and running my stuff up and down stairs about 8 times (there are only 4 terminals, mind you), It's 18.45. I wonder when the train will ever come.
I stand there thinking - anywhere - I'll go to Warsaw, I'll go to any city. Anywhere! I'm desperate; really desperate. But - I'll be OK. And then an elderly man walks up to me and asks, "You OK?" And I tell him my situation and he says, "Ne problem!" that he's actually going to Krakow on the 19.22 train! He accompanies me, buys me a ticket, waits with me, tells the people in our car about my situation.
And - he helps me find the main square (where my hostel is). Glory! My hostel is right in the main square (Crakow Hostel), and it's great so far! I had a meal of cheesey-chicken with 3 kinds of salad (two cabbage salads and a carrot salad) along with rice and it tasted so good after a long day without food.
Tomorrow will be filled with walking around the city, its statue-filled plaza, along with sidewalk cafes and small boutiques make it a gorgeous, ultra-European city. I'm in love already.
