Penzance - we have at least made it to the start - well…… 10 miles to Lands End from here. All the planning of routes and purchasing of kit is now over (including some mudguards for Andy, which are currently strapped to E's panniers, but she's hopeful they will be on A's bike before we set off!), and we are ready to rumble … Slowly. After packing last night we made the curious decision to weigh our bikes. Loaded with two weeks worth of kit, our LEJOG bikes weigh 20-25kg (depending on who you ask). By comparison, Andy's super-duper carbon bike weighs 8kg. At least it's nice to know that we would make BA's baggage allowance, should we decide to fly somewhere warmer/drier and cycle there instead.
Eleanor was impressed by the train journey down here, particularly Brunel's South Devon railway sea wall and the Tamar Bridge (sadly covered in scaffolding). We'll probably hear a bit more of him when we get to Bristol. Other entertainment on the train included a couple (4!!) of cans of Tribute from the St Austell brewery (Andy), magazines, analysing the hills through the rain splattered window and worrying that the cows half way up looked rather small (Eleanor), and when things got really desperate…minesweeper.
After a long journey we made it to Penzance and easily found our lovely B&B, perched on the seafront overlooking St Michaels Mount. We had a quick yummy dinner of local haddock, plaice and lemon sole with chips, salad and homemade tartar sauce, washed down with some Betty Stoggs (a session ale from the Skinners Brewery), before retiring to bed.
Weather is looking good in London tomorrow - shame we won't be there as it doesn't look that great down here. We are hoping to avoid the flash floods, landslides and other various issues that seem to be around at the moment.
Anyway - excited and ready to head off at 9.am. What's that in Eleanor time?
Thank you everyone for all your good wishes!
