The Decision
London, UK
Growing up I always had a desire to see the world. Luckily my parents shared a small love for travel so as a young kid I was lucky enough to have a fair few family holidays. But then the teens hit and the real world threw me into a life of restaurant management. That poeple comes with a contract of ridiculous hours, zero me time and certainly no real travel time... just the occasion vacation "when it suits business".
Coming from a smallish family im an only child. As well as work, being extremely close to my parents is another major factor i didnt make this decision any sooner. "how would mum cope", i use to think. The truth is, when i finally made up my mind to pursue my uncontrollable desire of wonderlust, she didnt! My mum refused to speak to me for a week after I told her I had handed in my notice, applied for a visa and would be leaving the country in 6 weeks. Yes 6 weeks... thats all I had, My decision was that random and unplanned, but id waited my whole life to make it... why not do it when it just felt right to do so.
Job quit. Visa sorted. Bags packed. Hong Kong..... First stop
