Long time no write. :)
Where to start... I ended up leaving the project a week early.. there were only 3 volunteers left, we'd surveyed everything and it just felt like a massive waste of time when I was trying to organise my Work America Visa.. which in the end hasnt worked out.. poobums... but never mind! I was actually quite suprised at how sad it was to leave the island for good, I think it was the people I was going to miss (minus Project manager and Director).
I spent my first two nights at Colonial lodge in Suva and treated myself to a pedicure :D good times! I also randomly bumped into Grace and Jane (2 latitude volunteers who teach at school on Moturiki where our project went for environment club on mondays). I found out that they and some of their other volunteers were going to stay at Beachhouse which is jst down the road from mango so we travelled together down ther which was nice. The surf school owner, Nass, was back from Oz and he organised to take a group of us to Natadola Beach for surfing, so me grace and another girl from Beachhouse went and it's such a nice beach! I'd heard it was supposed to be one of Fiji's best beaches and it was very nice (also a brand new intercontinental Hotel had jst been built and it looks AMAZING!!!! loads of day beds by the beach, inifinity pool...sooooo nice!) anyway the surf was really good that day and some 2m waves which were terrifying! I was absolutely exhausted by the afternoon! Ended up going to beachhouse with grace for drinks and food, it got too late to go back to mango so i slept on the floor of their dorm... it was very cold as i had only my damp towel to cover me... haha!
Mum and Dad arrived on weds 11th and I went to meet them but with fiji time i waited half an hour to get a lift to the main road and then an hour before anything turned up to travel to nadi :S so arrived an hour or so late.oops. fiji time.
Anyway they'd rented a car which was cool and we stayed at Bedarra inn which was SOOOOOOOOOO nice! and my bed was HUGE! the cocktails were also only $7.50 at happy hour! amazing!! so grace came and joined us for a couple of nights which was really nice (for me anyway)
We then headed to Lautoka to the Anchorage for a few nights. not as nice as bedarra but still lovely rooms and everything reli nice pool! Went with them to the airport to say goodbye, was lovely to see them for the week, didnt feel like id left home that long ago even tho had been over 3 months!) I then met Chris and Billie at Bamboo hostel and we headed back to Mango together where we stayed for a few days. Me and Chris then headed off to do a loop around viti levu with a trip to caqalai Island (next to leleuvia). and it was really nice! very different, had a very different feel to it. I wasnt very well those couple of days there which was annoying. Chris went and stayed on Leleuvia for the night and i went back to suva. I didnt really want to go back. i'd said goodbye once, didnt want to do it again. would also have been weird with noone on the island. after that we headed to nataleira to the eco lodge there because i wanted chris to do the dolping trip to moon reef which is amazing and the most beautiful place ever! unfortunately we were having really bad weather and so we couldnt do the trip... typical.
We managed to find a bus to take us throught the bush to northern viti levu to stay at volivoli resort. SO SO nice there! the dorms were really nice, huge pool, beaufitul views! After that we headed back to Nadi for a night before i left chris who was heading to the mamanucas and myself heading to taveuni...which turned out all the boats had broken down and they didnt know when there'd be another boat to go there...so i thought ok i'll go to kadavu which had the worlds 4th largest barrier reef to dive at... but boats only go twice a month and flights within fiji are very expensive... so not knowing what i was doing i went to stay at uprising for a couple of nights! Also another very nice backpackers! met a brit, an aussie and a kiwi guy and we had a wander along the beach and then tried to find the lagoon which had been used in the film anaconda... more than slightly disappointed because for some reason i had in my head a beautfiul big blue lagoon... infact it was a nice green and brown murky colour... lovely jubbly!
carrying on... watched a firewalking show in the evening, which of course they made look easy so we all had to go and prod the stones after they'd left... they were really flipping hot!! We then went to have kava in the local village which was actually really good! until the next day when needed to go to Nadi and was really really tired, crazy taxi driver didnt help, pretty sure we cheated death at least twice (by mayb an inch or so?!). Ended up at Denerau for a few hours having a look at the super yacts as one of the guys from Pac Harbour had to pick up his things from there as he'd been working on one(how awesome!) haha.
Went to Wayalailai in the yasawas for 3 nights and stayed at Naqalia lodge! Was a 2 hour boat ride but its was SO worth it! I was the only person in the resort on my first night so I sat around with all the Fijians having Kava which was fun but also kind of daunting when theres like 15 fijian men and just me! The ladies that work at the resort came and slept in the dorm with me that night to keep me company which I was really happy about! I was also really glad for them to come and sleep there because normally they just sleep on the floor of the main room/dining room. Got a boat the next morning to the resort a couple of bays round with Fish and Nemo (2 of the workers at naqalia!) and they showed me around the resort and took me to their village, we then hiked back through the bush which i didnt cope very well with because my flipflips are the most slippery things ever so they were pretty much holding on to me the whole time which was funny! Also went snorkelling which was really nice, I saw lots of the target fish i've learned! Oh and the day before a massive school of dolphins had swam past and me and fish had sat watching them for ages seeing them come up for air and some of them jump! it was so perfect! In the afternoon 3 german tourists around my age turned up so I had some company! On the sunday there was a church visit which i didnt want to do because a) you had to pay and b) done a church service before not up for one again... but then they made it complimentary and I had to go... was nice get a boat ride and see some of the island but sooooo not worth the church service, i think we only ended up staying for 30mins once the service had actually started! But the good thing about that day was in the evening the sky was sooo clear and there were hundreds and hundreds of stars and the milky way and I saw like 10+shooting stars!!!
The next day (day we were leaving but boat not til afternoon) me and Andy, one of the germans, went out snorkelling again and as we were heading to a different snorkel spot I felt something hitting my legs and was like WTF?! and turned round face to face with this thing that looks like a mini shark and a little sharksucker had decided to try and attach itself to me! every now and again it would swim up and bite my legs and other times just swim underneath my or try and suck to me skin, was really weird/annoying but kind of cool i suppose! got well anoying when it literally wouldnt leave me alone so we headed back to the beach.
