Emily's Trip
hi again!
this morning started with a packing session and a quick brekkie and a speed boat ride: this left at 8AM so it was still very cold. the manager of the lodge was going to drive the boat and he said we could use our blankets for the journey which in the end was SUCH a godsend!!!
we loaded on our stuff, said bye to the staff who had been so lovely and all completely wrapped up from head to toe in blankets looking like refugees (charlies words not mine) we zoomed off down the river.
on the way we saw a couple of wildlife species including one crocodile, 2 fish eagles and 2 water monitor lizards. i have to say even though the croc wasnt a very big one and we didnt see very much of it it was still fairly dramatic and when it submerged there was still quite a sense of hmmm wheres that gone :oS
gray and ferdi had driven round with martin to meet us at the other side of the delta and they were there waiting for us so we were picked up and driven off.....
the next few days are all a little bit confused for me but i'll jot down the bits that i remember: they wont be in the correct order or anything but hey memories are memories which i'd like to share with you whatever order they come in!
one of the nights we had a river cruise on the zambizi - this was i think our last night before we went to vic falls... we started off on a boat with quite a few other people on it and all sorts and we were just cruising down this massive river! pretty cool views but nothing extraordinary just a great chance to gossip with everybody. about half way through though the views got pretty cool!
we saw a male kudu standing proud with a couple of females standing round - they really are the oddest looking animals with that massive hump! we then were lucky enough to get FANTASTIC sitings of a crocodile and a hippo... the croc was just lying out on this sandy patch in the water looking like he was just posing for pics, again wasnt huge but you could see all the scales and everything, again really odd looking and then once more talking of odd. we had the most incredible siting of a hippo... at first it was just slumped on the floor sleeping but it was still pretty cool as we could see the sheer size of it but then as if it could hear us willing it on it woke up and just started "yawning" for the camera and it stood up and did a right pose for us: was VERY cool!
at one point towards the end there was what looked like a major squaring up between this hippo and an elephant and that was quite fun to watch, eventually hippo gave up though and nellie crossed the water - looked so ridiculous... all you saw were these trunks and then the occassional top of head bobbing up and down.
so yeh then gray and the boys joined us for the sunset dinner on the boat - by this time everyone else had vacated it for us... the staff on the boat did us a nice bbq with all kinds of meat; beef, chicken and boerworst with salads and rice etc and we all drank a bit too much and just had a really good time!
so it was all this kinda stuff to finish up botswana and namibia so i'll now start a new one for vic falls!
hope you've enjoyed the namibia and botswana stories!
lotsa luv to y'all!
