Ems and Steve Travelling
Hey,
Well, we had a fairly good overnight bus, i think i slept more than Emily did, which made a change. We had a meal stop just before 7am so we had a nice cooked breakfast (much better than toast, which has generally been the only item on the breafast menu so far).
So we arrived in Byron Bay just before 8am and we had a guy (who was just like Bish in many ways) pick us up and take us to the hostel. Unfortunately we couldn't check in till 10.30am and so we did more reading our books (and then Em slept a bit more on the sofas in the common room.
We then checked into this nice little "Island" room at Dorm rates as their dorms were nearly full (this was about 1/3 of the price these rooms are normally). For the rest of our fisrt day here we went for what we thoguht was ging to be a short walk along the front up to the light house. However, we soon realised that it was going to quite a trek. We went up to this little lookout post (which get cut off from the main land at high tide) before contining our journey up to the "most easternly point of mainland Australia" via several hundred steps. More steps followed to lead us up to the light house where we had a good view of most of Byron Bay. The walk down was much different as it went steeply down through the forest (we were very glad that we hadn't chosen to do the walk the other way around). After we got back we some how managed to miss dinner and head to a pool and darts competition in the bar across from the hostel, neither of us did very well.
The next day (Friday) we had a bit of a lay in before getting some early lunch and going for a surfing lesson. We all found the 'sweep' incredibly strong and it didn't take long for us all to get washed down the beach. Everyone in the group managed to stand up and found that surfing wasn't the hardest part of the day - heading back out in to the waves carrying a 9ft surf board took that prize. After we got back we went straight into the hot tub to relax. Later that evening we relaxed a little more in the on site cinema (which has sofas rather than your usual cinema seat) and watched "Cars" and to my surprise it was quite good.
Today (Saturday) we went to Nimbin, a very small village known for its marajuna (though we didn't know that till we were half way there on the bus). We were there for two hours and we can honestlly say that we were bored. After that we to this hippy's house, a recognised Botanic Garden which would have been nice but felt more like we were in the middle of the jungle (or something similar)- in the summer months people go for a swim in this guys home swimming pool (which is actually just a pond at the back of one his three houses). Minyon Falls was next and this was actually the nicest part of the day with a great view over the valley (even if the mist was nearly covering the top of the tree line).
Tonight we are just relaxing again and may go back to the cinema. Tomorrow we're going to Brisbane fairly early in the morning.
Speak soon!
