I'm so behind with these blogs so thought it was about time to update you all on Malaysia.
We arrived by plane from Siem Reap and managed to navigate our way to Chinatown by bus and the MRT sky train. The sky train is really cheap and easy to use; it costs about 20p to make a journey across the city. Accommodation was expensive which was to be expected in a big city but we found Reggae Guesthouse which was fully air-cond throughout (God send considering how hot it is here!) and included breakfast and internet, plus they had a massive flat screen tele that we watched movies on at night.
Our time in KL really wasn't that exciting. It's one of those cities that would be awesome to live in but not as fun to explore as a tourist. There are LOADS of shopping malls there and the amount of Macdonalds and KFCs is ridiculous. So needless to say we spent a lot of our time in a mall of some sort (the air con provided a great relief from the heat of the streets). It was amazing and Dean actually didn't complain because he was so grateful that they were cold inside! The malls here put England to shame. Although shopping had to be limited due to funds, it was nice to have a few days of living like a westerner again. We are ashamed to admit it but we also ate Macdonalds for lunch 3 days in a row. *Hang heads in shame* They have a deal between 12 and 3 where a big mac meal is only a quid eighty and it's a really cheap meal as Malaysia isn't as cheap as everywhere else we've been to.
At night we ate in Chinatown from the little restaurants on the side of the street, which were the cheapest places to eat. There was also a big market each night that kept us entertained for a bit. Alcohol is really expensive here... UK prices =O
There are two main things to do in KL (besides shop!) and they are the Petronas towers and the Batu caves, the latter of which we were informed weren't very impressive. So on one day we got up early and went and queued for one of the 1400 free tickets to the skybridge of the Petronas towers, the highest twin towers in the world. We managed to bag one of the earliest viewing slots and so that meant we didn't have to go back later in the day. Before going up to the skybridge you are taken to a big room with lots of puzzles and videos and a large glass chamber which every so often gives a lightning display about what it's like when the towers are hit. You are then shown a 3D film in a little cinema... bit of marketing for Petronas! Up on the bridge you get some amazing views across the city and with it being such a clear day, we could see for miles. It was a bit disappointing though to look up and see that you weren't quite halfway up the towers though! It was a cool thing to do but in truth it did feel a little bit like Blackpool Tower but without the glass floor!
We also went to the cinema whilst in KL and saw Angels and Demons. 3 quid each to get in and share a larger popcorn and drink... bargain! So that was KL... not really that exciting but it was nice to just mooch about like we would at home for a few days. 4 more blogs on their way over the next couple of days... about time really! Sorrry!!
