Emmett's Adventures
Alright Folks,
That Border crossing wasn't so bad was it? From the boarder we went to Lake Nicaragua to the island of Ometepe. Again you would have seen the pictures from here. It was a long days and took 5 buses, 1 taxi and a ferry to get us there. So 12 hours we left Costa Rica we arrived at our destination, a nice little hotel on the beach.
When we got there I was roasting from our long day and once again myself and Jacob got a nice little pink room. So rather than head for the shower I throw my swimming shorts on and headed for the water. At this point I should l tell you that Lake Nicaragua is home to the only fresh water shark - the Bull Shark. They are not huge but big enough at about a couple of metres and have that scary jaws look to them. I was told that it is safe to swim in the lake but don't go out too far. Not that it matters as Bull Sharks can come right up to the shore line. With all of this info I decided to go swimming in the now dark shark infested lake. After wading for about 200 metres the water level was only up to my chest, but with little vision of the shore line and the hotel only a couple of tiny lights I went for a short swim until I decided it would be not so scary to swim in the day light.
I was told that the sun rises were amazing on the island and asked what time the sun came up. So at 6am I got up to see the sun rise but missed the blood red sky part. It was really nice though as I had the beach to myself other than a few birds catching fish. As the day woke up I bumped into a few fishermen. Feeling energized from what saw I went for a swim and than later a job and another swim. Feeling far too healthy I decided to drink a few beers to make up for my days efforts. Not wanting to be out done by the sun rise I got up the next morning at 5am and got to see the blood red sky. Once I saw it and got some shots I went right back to bed. Later on that day I got my hair braided by Amanda (one of the other group members). Although I am of the opinion that white guys can not pull off braided hair I have to say it looked okay. So two days later I got Amanda to take it out! I had her take them out as I couldn't wash my hair properly and it was full of sand from tall the swmming and lying on the beach.
From Ometepe we headed to Granada to spend a whole three days there. Three days somewhere was a nice thought and we all looked forward to it. That was until we got there. The hotel was not the best, in fact calling it a hotel is an insult to the word. It was also incredible humid. When we got in I went to have a shower to cool off only to find out that there was no water and that it would come on and go off for the rest of the time we were there. Nevermind though at least the staff brought us a fan to cool the room. It would have worked fine had there been any electricity! Wow, a whole three days here! I had planned to catch up with the site and call Sharlene when I was there but with the electrity going on and off in the town it became mission impossible to get anything done. Luckily I was able to speak to Sharlene and that made Granada okay again. When I was heading back to my cell I came across a info place that advertised some diving. Wopee, something cool to do at last.
I went diving in Lake Apoyo which was formed in a crater created by a now extinct volcano. It was with a Biological reserve and I was there to help collect data for a sub species they were trying to get recognized. As dives go it was okay but it was a new experience diving in fresh water and it was cool to be doing diving to help in charting a new species of fish.
From Granada we left for yet another boarder. This time we were heading for Honduras and some cool diving.
Until I see you over the boarder, Em
