Day 16 - Sun 28 Dec
Up at 6 this morning to finish packing and have a quick breakfast before leaving at just after 7 for the airport for our flight to San Jose. The airport was very busy but we managed to get through in time and get a nice sandwich before the very pleasant 1 hour flight.
Started our drive up to La Fortuna which was lovely - very green countryside and better roads so far! Took just over 3 hours to get to our hotel, Volcano Lodge, which is lovely. We have a little wooden cabin (much like the jungle) and one wall is just a window looking straight at the volcano! And to top it off we had our own coffee machine with a complimentary bag of Costa Rican coffee - bliss. It was pretty cloudy when we arrived so could really see the peaks or any lava or anything but still, wonderful location. Also this place has two pool complexes with a large pool and jacuzzi in each so very nice facilities. We headed straight to the pool and jacuzzi which cured a few aches!
After talking to reception we heard about a bridge about 15mins drive away which is a great spot for looking at the lava flows so off we went! We got there, parked up and found about 50 people standing in the pitch black looking at the volcano but there was no lava to be seen! Very strange experience! We waited about 10 minutes but there wasn't much happening so off we went for some dinner.
Day 17 - Mon 29 Dec
Woke up at 6.30 again and Tim went for a run but I was still sore from the driving so did a bit more stretching on our terrace whilst watching the volcano - what a view!
Had a lovely buffet breakfast - huge plate of tropical fruit and of course, marvellous coffee!
Headed out to the National Park to hike through the forest and get to the base of the Volcano. When we left the peaks were covered in cloud but as we walked it got clearer and clearer and when we got to the end of the trail which is at the base it was completely clear - got some fantastic pics and saw lots of rocks hurtling down the side of the volcano as well as hearing the rumblings. Was a truly amazing sight and even more so as all the guide books and people here say that seeing the volcano completely clear is a very rare sight indeed as its usually covered in cloud so we were very lucky.
Headed back to the hotel in time for lunch and then relaxed by the pool for a couple of hours whilst facing the volcano (you sort of get hooked on the view).
Set off for a drive to see a local waterfall but somehow missed the turn off and got there too late as it shut at 5 so we´ll see it tomorrow. Contemplated going to one of the Hot Springs they have here in La Fortuna but the prices were pretty high - $45 dollars each! We figured we had the best Hot Springs experience in Ecuador so decided against it - plus our hotel has a jacuzzi. So we went back to our jacuzzi to see the sunset against the volcano - now that was spectacular.
