So, I have been rather neglectful of my blog thus far...
We have been in Cambodia for three days now, and I am really enjoying it, despite the early mornings! Our first stop in Cambodia was Siem Reap, which seems to be a Westernized version of a traditional Khmer town. We were up at 4.30 in the morning (I thought such times were a myth) to watch the sunrise over Angkor Wat, which was pretty incredible. The temple is huge, and very imposing - especially when backed by the sun. We then spent the following 10 hours exploring other temple ruins, including Bayon and "The Tomb Raider Temple", which is sprouting trees in very odd places, making it look almost mystical. We also climbed a very tall temple, up small and exceedingly steep steps - which was exhausting in the heat of the Asian sun. In the evening, we headed for a fish massage, which was certainly an experience, though I didn't find it relaxing at all. You sit with your feet in a fish tank, and they nibble at your feet which was a very odd experience - like tiny little needles poking me.
The next day brought a little bit of market shopping and bartering (still not really got the hang of that), followed by a 6 hour local bus ride, which was nowhere near the nightmare we were anticipating. Phnom Penh initally seemed like just another Asian city, but the couple of restaurants and kooky ex-pat bar we have visited are definitely changing my opinion. Today we visited S21 and the Killing Fields, which made the history of the country come to life, in a very sad way - the brutality of the Khmer Rouge was just so extreme and devasting.
Tomorrow's events will be so different from that experience, as we head beach-wards!
