1st October 2008: We leave Cusco ihis morning and head to Ollantaytambo, a small town from where we will be starting the Inca Trail. We´re all vey excited given that this trek is one of the highlights of our trip - none of us can quite believe that tomorrow we will be walking the Inca Trail!! We take a quick walk around town, from where we can see some nearby Inca ruins. We walk to the market and decide it would be wise to buy some ponchos in case of rain on the trail and almost immediately after we say the word ´poncho´, market vendors come running from all directions, laden with every imaginable colour of poncho! We all buy one in various colours before heading off for lunch at a nearby cafe called Tawa Chaki, which means ´four feet´ in Quecha, a local dialect. We assume this is named after the unfortunate gineau pigs who feature prominently on the menu. We are inspired by the name though, and decide to call our Inca Trail team ´Eskay Chaki´ - two feet! Three of our group are heading off to do the Lares Trek while the rest of us are on the Inca Trail so after a last supper together we head off to get an early night.
