Emma's Year In China
Okay, blog post number 3..here we go!!
Before I start, we can't get access to facebook so for those who have messaged me and I haven't replied I AM NOT IGNORING YOU! sorry!! Hannah/Niamh is posting my blog on my facebook for me :) If you want to contact me my email is [email protected] and my wechat is emmasmith1403.
So our school timetable is split in to a 2 week rotation. Week 1 is a single week where we teach 7 classes each, and week 2 is a double week where we teach a different 7 classes each. And then it goes back to week 1 and so on. I am teaching Senior 2 which are students aged 15-18 and Gina is teaching Senior 1 where the students are 14-17. We have been teaching together when we can and then when we both have class, we teach individually! This week is when we will start teaching actual lessons, the past 2 weeks have been introducing ourselves and trying to figure out how much English the classes already know.
The students are making us feel famous, everytime we walk into a class we get a huge round of applause and a cheer..think my ego is going to take a serious bruising when I come home next year! But no matter, I still have 11 months of being stared at to make me feel good! Seriously, the staring is getting ridiculous, cars are actually slowing down to a crawl beside us so that they can stare at us for longer!
The classes are all up for great fun and always make me laugh whether it be asking for our phone numbers during our lesson or them running to the front to take a selfie! Ofcourse, they are continually making fun of as and pretending that they don't understand what we are saying which can be frustrating. Gina and I have worked out a good system to get rid of that which provides the whole class with some laughs!
Other than teaching, we have finally found a vegetable shop which was so exciting! We got a bit carried away in there and may or may not have purchased most of the shop.. but atleast we're being healthy! Taxi's have also been great fun, lots of pointing and shouting stop when we want out! Gina has also resorted to speaking in every other language bar English in Taxi's which is entertaining to watch!
In the 2 weeks we have been in Liujiaxia we have made a tonne of new friends! We are constantly being invited out places which is really lovely! We must be amusing to watch as we spend all of our time on translators trying to have conversations!
We also don't have any hot water in our flat, which means we have to shower out of a bucket...not fun. And it transpires we won't be getting any hot water, excellent! Oh well, we will just have to get used to washing out of buckets but hey ho! Our bathroom also doesnt have a light so cold showers in the dark... yay!!
I really am having the most amazing time! Regardless of the fact that there have been a few navigational disasters ( getting lost in the Province capital for 6 hours trying to find Jess and Harriet, and then spending a further 2 hours trying to find Pizza Hut and then getting a 2 hour taxi home and have it break down in the middle of the mountains in the pitch black!) and the language barrier! Hopefully our Mandarin is starting to improve, we can sort of understand what people are saying sometimes! Still got a long way to go with that but my goal is to sing a song in Chinese at the end of the year and know what i am singing!
That's it for this post, will try to upload some pictures!
I have access to instagram so lots of photos are on that, emmasmith1403
Hopefully will update soon!
