Made it to Singapore via a very long boat and bus trip from Tioman Island which involved an interesting system at the border where you get chucked off one bus, get checked out of Malaysia and just hope that there is another bus waiting for you at the other side only for the same thing to happen all over again a few miles down the road when you enter Singapore!
On our first full day in Singapore we decided that we hadn't had enough beach action in the past few weeks so headed to Sentosa Island to work on the tans! Felt a bit like you were at disneyland minus Mickey and Emma was not too impressed when several dogs approached her in the sea, one complete with its own buoyancy aid! That night we headed to the Night Safari in Singapore Zoo. Initially thought we had been scammed by the bus company when we pulled up outside a hut that did not look anything like the official entrance to the park as described in our guidebook! Fortunately it was all above board and we jumped on our "jungle tram" which took us round the park where we saw lions, leopards, giraffes and elephants. Our guide reliably informed us that we would not see any female lions because they were 'shopping". Unfortunatley this was the standard of humour endured on the whole tour! Emma, again, not too impressed when the guide informed us the next animal was a family of giant rats but they were pretty cute and not much like rats so all was ok.
The 9th of August is Singapore's National Day when they celebrate their independence from us! We spent the day seeing the sights including Raffles hotel, Raffles Landing Strip, Arab Street, Mosques and The National Museum. We joined the rest of Singapore to have dinner overlooking Singapore river and were lucky enough to catch the firework display before heading to Raffles Hotel (very posh) for Singapore Slings and monkey nuts!
Our last day in Asia we were meant to be going for a leisurly forest walk. Emma, however, had other ideas so instead we hiked up to the highest point in Singapore where we managed to get lost and add an hour onto the original walk! Not good in 80% humidity, 82 miles from the equator... sweating doesn't even begin to cover it! After a much needed lunch on Oxford Road and an even more needed shower we headed to the airport to catch our flight to Cairns.
Arrived safely in Cairns yesterday where we started our 5 week adventure in Oz... details to follow..
