Cuenca has been described as Ecudaor?s most beautiful colonial city, and we happen to agree! We spent the first day wandering around the lovely streets and soaking up the relaxed atmosphere. We booked a guided trek around the National Park Cajas for the following day, which promised stunning views of craggy hills, glacier-scoured valleys and literally hundereds of beautiful lakes. Unfortunately when we were collected at 8am the following day, our guide informed us that an unusually cold grey day had been forecast. The first area we visited is home to hundereds of different birds, including brightly coloured Toucans, but I think they were all sheltering from the rain, and so all we saw were ducks!! We then climbed to a view point at 4,100 which should have given us views down over the park, but by this time the fog had come rolling in so the view was limited to about 10ft. The next lake was not up to much, but you could tell that on a clear day it would be beautiful. You will see from the photos of the lake that it felt more like being in the Highlands of Scotland!!! After eating the most amazing trout at the nearby farm, we returned back to Cuenca. Unfortunately Jona wasnt 100% for the next few days and moving to far from a toilet was a dangerous game, so our time in Cuenca was fairly chilled and relaxed. We both loved Cuenca, certainly my favourite town so far. As always there were other places we wanted to visit, so we decided to leave once Jona was better and headed for the Spa town of Banos?
