I was reminded recently that I have been very neglectful of this site. Photos are now up-to-date for Canada and Ghana. I know I have been terribly useless at keeping up with the blog side of things. In Ghana I could use the excuse of very slow internet connections. In Canada.....I guess I was just having too much fun!
Anyway...What a year! The opportunities I have had have truely been amazing.
My personal hilights from my 8 months in canada include (but certainly were not limited to):-
- Taking a canoe through the unspoilt wilderness of Algonquin Park, enjoying the fall colours and making some of the best frinds anyone could wish for in the amazing Mac Outdoor Club.
- Planning and booking my first weekend break to Quebec to see the world's best compete at Skate Canada. Getting a kiss from Brian Joubert and taking the same flight back as Mao Asada.
- Making wonderful music and great friends in CCC and McMaster Choirs.
- Christmas with the Huston Clan in Beautiful British Columbia. (Anyone looking for their own Eden- Gabriola is a great place to start!)
- Skating the entire length of the frozen Rideau Canal (in both directions) in Ottawa and celebrating my achievement with a Beaver Tail and Hot Chocolate.
- Tottling around Montreal at -25oC
- Going back to Algonquin to go snowshoeing and dog-sledding on the same lakes I had canoed on in September.
Thank you to everyone who was so kind to 'the foreigner' and made it a year to remember, particularly the wonderful people of the Outdoors Club, Christ's Church Cathedral Choir and McMaster Choir.
May- Home again, but not for long! By the beginning of June I was off again and in Cape Coast Ghana for a veru different adventure. Global Volunteer Projects had sent me out to get experience in an African hospital. It certainly was an experience!
- At the last count - Seven babies born on my watch in Maternity, including our very special set of twins.
- A chance to observe first hand major surgeries and doctors at work.
- Valuable opportunities to see tropical diseases such as malaria and typhoid.
- Taking people's BLOOD (evil laugh!) in the lab.
- My first experience of a very different culture
- Travelling the country by the various exciting forms of Ghanaian transport (particularly the trotros!)
- Spending wonderful afternoons with the Human Service Trust orphans
- Seeing Elephants in Mole and Crocodiles at Hans Cottage
- Injuring myself in order to break into coconuts with a pen-knife
- Relaxing from all this at the paradise of Beyin beach resort with friends
Thanks here go to Global Volunteers, Kevin in the UK and Eric in Ghana. Mrs Mary my Ghanaian host mother, and to my fellow volunteers, Emma T, Kate, Emma B, Matt, Alex and Claire. We will sort out that first album for our rock band soon.
Anyway right now I am supposed to be packing ready for my LONG awaited return to Lancaster for the excitement of 3rd year.
As you may guess after all this I still have itchy feet to travel again very soon. I WILL post again next week once I am back in my Cartmel room and let you know my plans for the next year (as there are some very exciting trips on the horizon. If I forget to write again very soon, someone give me a kick to make me do so!
Love
Emma x
