Monkey and Pumpkin riding up front it was time to bid farewell to Cape Cod, Massachusetts and drive across state into New Hampshire. I'm heading to Conway to a hostel I found on the internet- http://www.whitemountainshostel.com/ It's still drizzling with rain so there's limited sunlight. That doesn't prevent the fall foliage from looking stunning or discourage me from hopping out of the car periodically to take pics. Theres a strong aroma of pine in the air.......mmmmaaaaaaaahhhh! Again I'm driving without a map but get to Conway without any problems. Arriving at the hostel, there's a heavy downpour. The front entrance is locked, a sign in the window suggesting I call a number to alert the manager. Great....I have no phone! I wait it out in the car and eventually another backpacker arrives, she lets me in. I meet the queer woman that runs the place (as in strange, not gay). It's a shoes off at the door, homely kinda place and I can't help but titter at all the handwritten signs from the management plastered all over the walls. I hang out in the lounge for the evening and chat to a English police officer who worked during the London riots. "BREAK FOR MOOSE. IT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE" Warn drivers every mile along the road. I'd been so taken in by the stunning scenery I'd not been taking any notice of the fuel gauge and it had hit empty almost 30 miles ago! At a visitor centre called Willy's I asked how far it was to the next gas station. How relieved was I to hear it was only a couple more miles ahead. Driving along on vapour I was avoiding being too heavy footed on the gas pedal. Up ahead on the left...Moose....MOOSE!!! I did brake for moose, reversed up and promptly took out my camera to capture some shots. She was such a beautiful mass of a creature, grazing on the side of the road about 5 metres away. Amazing, but I sure wouldn't want to meet one on the wrong side of my windsheild! Onward to Silver Cascade waterfall, still on a high from seeing moose for the first time, I politely asked a couple to take my pic. Gratefully I say thank-you but truthfully I wish the people I ask to snap my pic could improve their skills of composition- oh well, lol! The great British actor, writer, comedian, Stephen Fry had told me about the White Mountains Cog Railway....Ok, Ok, I'd watched him go up there on his tele series- Stephen Fry in America. I decided I would see it for myself whilst I was in the area. http://www.thecog.com/ The ticket booth were selling discounted tickets. $10 off as the inclement weather had restricted the train making it to the summit of Mount Washington. Hey, I'm all for making a saving! Onboard the train, passing by the sign indicating 4500ft elevation, passengers had the opportunity to stand in the ailse to defy the laws of gravity. The gradient of the incline was soo steep it felt almost impossible to fall forward. See my pic. In the afternoon sun I hiked Flume Gorge beneath a canopy of golden leaves. Back in the car I attempted to chase the sun around the mountains to see the sunset but settled for a ending the day admiring a rainbow. Tomorrow I'll be heading to the Ben & Jerry's Icecream Factory in Vermont. Ironically a lady in my dorm shared her tub of Chunky Monkey that night before we went to sleep. Sweet Dreams!
