We had a leisurely start to the day and wandered into Lima to see the city. We walked towards the seafront where there was an impressive array of upper class shops and restaurants - so built up! Lima is extremely cosmopolitan compared to other places we had been. We walked along the cliff edge by the sea, with a hot and hazy day - much warmer than everywhere else in Peru.
We walked from Miraflores where our hostel was based to a trendy, bohemian district named Barranco which both of us liked immediately. Some of the architecture was really beautiful and varied a lot from old colonial "casonas", or abandoned buildings with intricate designs to new modern brightly coloured blocks.
We stopped for some lunch at Barancco Beer Company which was a really individual restaurant with great food, and then continued to wander. We ended up at the MATE museum - a museum dedicated to the photography works of Mario Testino the famous Peruvian photographer. The exhibitions were amazing and Mario's work portrays a huge amount of character and real life circumstance. Having shot so many celebrities (even Princess Diana) the museum was really interesting to look around.
Back in Miraflores we finished off our shipping for Andean style souvenirs at an artisan market and then went to treat ourselves to a decadent dinner of sushi - yum! Our wonderful time in Peru had come to an end as we left on a flight for Colombia. It was absolutely hilarious as a Latino woman got in a fight with the air hostess before we were able to take off, and the whole plane revelled in the situation - South American locals love a bit of drama!
