We made ourselves a feast of a breakfast and then went out to take a look around San Jose. The weather was pretty miserable and our first impressions of San Jose were that it was dull, dirty and tacky. It felt very strange being back in such a big city again, especially with all the large department stores and nice vehicles.
We walked into the main park and walked around the surrounding markets and were again unimpressed with San Jose - it felt like being in Watford! After we'd had enough of wandering around the streets we started walking back to our hostel, and just as we did it began pouring with rain! We chilled at the hostel for a bit and to be honest were glad to be checking out of such a strange place as we left for the bus station.
It was gutting to be informed that the only bus to Monteverde was full, despite having arrived at the terminal an hour early. Our lack of Spanish made it difficult for us to figure out what was being said, or what our other options were and the torrential rain made the whole situation feel very tragic. We stood in the rain looking sad and desperate, and after everyone with tickets had been let into the bus there was a sudden influx of people paying the driver to get on! We did the same to discover that we could too get on but had to sit on the floor or stand for the 5 hour journey! It seemed like such a bizarre system and we were so confused but this is Costa Rica I guess - any way to make more money goes. We were just happy to be going to Monteverde as planned.
Thankfully around two hours in Liv and i, along with everyone else who didn't have a seat were switched to another bus for the rest of the journey. What we learnt in South/Central America is that when they say no, what they actually mean is yes if the police aren't around. We checked in at El Tucan hostel.
