We arrived in warm Medellin early in the morning and travelled to Poblado, an extremely nice area where Happy Buddha Boutique Hostel was based. We has some breakfast at a cafe nearby which was so luxury and I ordered a smoked salmon and cream cheese toasted bagel - home comforts! We then went out to explore and although everywhere was very very quiet I could tell it was a lovely neighbourhood we were in.
We got the metro to Industriales and climbed up Nutibara Hill for views over the city and surrounding mountains and to enjoy the little town on top. We sat and had our packed lunches on a bench and admired the beautiful views before heading back down again and catching the metro into the city centre; Parque Berrio and Parque Bodero feature sculptures of famous Latino artists and were packed with locals. The squares were perfect for people watching and with the fantastic hot sunny weather we didn't mind just sitting and watching passers by.
We returned to our hostel to check in and cooked ourselves some pasta for dinner, as backpackers do, and then proceeded to the bar for "Messy Monday's". The event was run by the hostel and so the bar was packed with a lively atmosphere! We met two Canadian guys from Montreal who we started drinking with and eventually all entered into the Messy Monday's game, which involved drinking 60 shots of jungle juice (vodka, rum and fruit punch) as fast as you could. The money you paid for signing up was given to charity so the four of us entered as two teams. Lethal! The shots were disgusting and when our leader turned her back I started throwing them off the balcony to the street below! Very funny. We finally found out that today had been a bank holiday in Colombia and that was why everything had been closed all day - and unfortunately the same would apply to the bars and clubs. The whole hostel went out to one bar that was open and even though the night was short I had a really good time and met some fun people.
