Hi,
We have made it to our last destination in south america!
I really like santiago, its a very big city but we have found some nice areas and it almost feels like home!
We are staying in barrio brasil in a small but nice hostel. The hostel is in a bohemian district with lots of pubs and restaurants but its right next to Cerro San Cristobel, a mountain in the centre of Santiago with a statue of the virgin mary on the top! (see photo)
Its very cathiolic here, as with all of south america and when we walked to the top there is a massive area for outdoor mass and a church, that all the chilleans were visting and offering money.
We walked up cerro san cristobel twice that day as we figured we needed some excercise, the locals seem to run and cycle up there alot, there is a nice forestal parque probably about 10 hectares!!!!!
We visited an open air swimming pool in the park, which was very busy and then back into town for a local drink. The TERROMOTO (earthquake) is about a PINT of sherry like liquor with a dash of menta? on top and then a big ball of ice cream is placed in it!!!!!!!!!!! Bizarre and not that nice, but ricky had 2! We then went home and slept for the rest of the day!
Today we went on a wine tour in the Maipo Valley, it was very pretty and a perfect location for vines. We visited a small "Underrega" and large "Concho Y Toro" vineyard and tasted some lovely wines. It was a lovely day out, we got given free wine glasses from each vineyard but i doubt they will make it home!
We are both very excited about going to New Zealsnd tomorrow and we write from there soon.
Em and Rick xxx
