Carlos & Emma The Great Escape
From Hanoi we have slowly been making our way south to Ho Chi Minh City. We bought an open bus ticket giving us the flexibility to hop on and off where we like. 1st stop was Nimh Binh which was basically a ghost town. We walked around on the first night looking for a bar and found nothing but signs for Karoke, so making the best of a bad situation we decided to stop at one for a drink, we were lead into somebody's front room which they had set up for westeners to sing, we quickly made our apologies and left. We caught the bus out of Nimh Binh the next night, it was an over-nighter to Hue, not the most comfortable bus, plus we got a puncture at 2 in the morning, but not to worry the driver pulled into a garage and about 5 men came running out and fixed it for us. What's the saying in England you can't get quicker than a quick fit fitter, you want to try Vietnam!!!!
We arrived in Hue the next morning exhausted after virtually no sleep. Hue is a very pretty town where you can take a boat cruise along the purfume river or visit one of the many tombs. The people of Hue are very nice although they can get quite annoying at times. They follow you everywhere asking the same questions, Where you from? Where you go? Want to buy something? Cyclo?, we are thinking of having placards made up with our answers on.
From Hue we went to Hoi An. Here they have a cultural festival each month which we were lucky enough to be at. In the evening we took a walk to the river which they had lit up with thousands of floating candles and inflatable dragons and turtles, during the festival electricity is banned so the streets are lit up by the full moon and lanterns outside the shops and restaurants. During the day we rented a motorbike and lay on the beach fighting off the street vendors, there were more of these then tourists, we gave in eventually to a little boy selling baby pineapples, it's amazing to watch them carve and peel the fruit, they then chop it in half and you eat it like a lollipop, YUM!!!
From Hoi An it was another overnighter to Nha Trang, again there was a problem with the wiring of the bus, the driver was trying to fix these wires with his teeth, they really don't have any sense over here. We arrived in Nha Trang early Saturday morning, just in time for the full moon party in the evening. Needless to say things are a bit hazy due to the amount of alcohol consumed, but judging by our heads the next morning I assume a good night was had (only joking Dad I remember everything!!). On the Sunday it was our 2nd Wedding Anniversary where we had a lovely dinner overlooking the beach. We decided to treat ourselves the next day to a trip to the Hot Springs. This was fantastic, we started off with a mudbath followed by a relaxing dip in the hot springs and then we spent the rest of the day hanging round the pools, Carlos didn't believe me when I told him the pool was a hot as the springs until he jumped in and got a shock!!! Don't know how he missed the sign saying 38 degrees. You had to get out of the water to cool down.
Carlos also had a go at scuba diving while I snorkled. He had 2 dives and saw some amazing coral formations, check out the photos of him, there's some excellent ones.
Last stop is Ho Chi Minh City where we have just arrived, so we're off to explore and we'll write soon.
Missing you all,
Love
