Carlos & Emma The Great Escape
They say the best way to travel in Vietnam is with your eyes closed, and after travelling nearly 1800km and several near head on collisons with rather large trucks I swear never to moan about National Express again.
Well yes we are now in Ho Chi Minh, the place where everyone is your friend, for a price. I can't say that I've enjoyed Ho Chi Minh much, it was a lot bigger than I thought with more people trying to rip you off constantly, it became rather tiring very quickly. We took a couple of cyclos down to the river on the first day for what we hoped was going to be a romantic river boat cruise along the Siagon River, instead she took us around the docks, we asked if we could go the other way but speaking no english she just grinned and carried on, funnily enough she knew the english to ask for a tip, she didn't get one. So deciding not to be beaten we went on a cyclo tour of the city, they charge by the hour so we decided to go for the hour, after 45 minutes we still hadn't seen any sights due to the snails pace they were going, needless to say we were getting very frustrated. We finally arrived at the Notre Dame which was closed, unbelievable, we left them there and walked round to the Post office, this is a must see sight in Vietnam the building is amazing then we were to find our oasis which was to become our 2nd home here, they did the best chocolate banana flambe pancakes ever, it was like a little piece of heaven!!
Unfortunately we never made it to the Cu Chi tunnels due to sickness which was a great shame, especially as we paid for it twice. It took us 3 attempts to get out of Ho Chi Minh as we both came down with a sickness bug, thankfully the travel company were very accommodating and helpful.
All in all we have absolutely loved it here in Vietnam. We've seen some amazing sights travelling by coach, there's something quite tranquil about watching the people working out in the fields using equipment that you'd thought went out of date in the 1930's but is still used daily over here. We're in Cambodia now and already seeing the differences between the 2 countries.
