we crossed the border into poipet where we didnt recieve that much trouble getting a visa. we got a taxi fro there to siem reap which only took 3 and a half hours. and the road wasnt nearly as bad as we thought it was going to be...although obviously was quite bad pot holes over the whole road the whole way! once we got there we checked into dead fish guesthouse which had an amazing restaurant!! we stayed there for 3 nights.
the next day we headed up to ankor wat. we got a tuk tuk for the day and he drove us around all the temples. our first stop was ankor wat which was an incredible sight for the first time, its so huge, amazing, even though it was raining!! wqe walked around then through into the middle where u could climb to the top level of the temple the steps were really steep though and really slippery! me and lucy got half way when luc started to fresk out coz she looked down! then the people at the bottom just told us to carry on and not to look down. we managed to make it up and then back down again in one piece, we found that there was actually a walking rail on the other side which made comming down a lot easier!!! ha ha ha. after lunch we headed to the ruins of Ankor thom and the bayon temple, which was really good, the details on some of the stones were incredible! next stop was the jungle temple which was the one with the tree growing out of it! very impressive to see! after a full day of temple looking, we were all templed out, so headed home for some dinner!
next day was spent looking around siem reap and checking out the markets which was huge!
nextday was a 4am start to catch the bus to phenom phen. the bus ride only took 6 hours which was fairly goos, some of the roads were even tarmacked which made the journey a lot nicer! when we arrived in the city we were met by about 100 tuk tuk drivers wanting to take us to the guesthouse, the police were even hitting them with sticks to get thewm to back off!! was bit scary!! we managed to get a driver and head to lakeside where we stayed for the 3 days, right on the lake which was cool for sunsets.
our first day in the city we headed to S21 which was a school which had been turned into a prison during the war, and has been left how it was found, its quite sad walking around it. esp when u see the interogation rooms and how they tortured the victims. in the afternoon we headed for the russian markets for a few bargains mangaed to get some really nice cambodian silk scarves. the second day there we went to chew ek the killing fields where they took people from S21 and from all over the country to be executed. we walked around all tyhe mass graves there. in the afternoon we went and checked out the royal palace and the silver pagoda, where they had some pretty impressive buildings!
