After much time you feel like your just going around in circles 'oh they'll never get it' The back pain, dry throat, sore hands but you keep pushing yourself and those little ones who sit in front you. Everyday those innocent faces stare back at you, their only movement is to blink as you sing and talk quite literally at them. But you keep singing, you keep talking at this brick wall because this wall isn't so tall and as the classes pass by the bricks begin to fall. Lips begin to move, mimicking your 'noises' to the tongue, to actual sound. "What's your name?" I ask again, "What's your name?" (Please!) "What's your name?" And then quite simply "Teacher Emma, my name is..." The smile is huge and I don't mean mine. They look up at me, a proudness beaming from their glistening eyes. It's so incredible and so important too that at such a young age they can understand and enjoy that emotion of being proud. They continue to smile at me as if to say 'Teacher Emma I've known the answer for some time now but I've quite enjoyed watching you perform like a monkey in front of us' I give him his well deserved high five as he runs back to his chair, others laughing as teacher blows her hand from the super tough high five.
These tiny souls when running can't even keep up with theirselves and go toppling over. These tiny souls who still can't understand that if you don't carry a plate at the correct angle then yes all your food will fall off. These tiny souls who still need you to hold their hand and help them in the bathroom. These tiny souls totally unaware how fantastic their tiny minds are. I watch them walk alone chatting to everything around them but unconsciously chatting in two languages.
First term, where did you go? Classes, days and weeks all flew by but I've already seen progress. It's such a wonderful feeling. My greatest moment so far of 2014 in this first term was defiantly watching my class of 3 years old learn the numbers. The usual we start from 1 to 5, up to 10 and continue up to 20 if they can remember but no worries if not, they're only 3 years old so counting up to 10 is also great. BUT being the wonderful lot they are of course they kicked the number 10 out the way and went straight to 20. I was extremely chuffed by this until I found out that these little ones actually can't count to 20 in their first language, then I was ecstatic!
