A little delayed, but I figured I should do a London blog.
So I got in to heathrow super early, like 5am early, so was at the hostel by around 7, but couldn't check in til 2pm. So again I was forced to wander the city when all I wanted to do was crash. I guess that was good in a way, otherwise I would have ended up terribly jet lagged. As it was, I thought I'd beaten it, but even a week later I was still feeling tired at weird times.
So I dumped my pack at the hostel and went window shopping in oxford st. Not quite as bad not being able to buy anything as in Singapore, except maybe in topshop, it's the biggest store I've ever seen! Caught up with ally and sam in hyde park and spent the arvo chillaxing.
The next day we did some touristy stuff, got epic bruises from trying to climb the trafalgar square lions in thongs, but the rain kept forcing us in to pubs to drink cider. Later we went to a play called the woman in black, about this chick that haunts an old house.
I also went on the free walking tour of London, which was pretty good, they tell you all the stories behind the main attractions, like the drunken Irish guy who broke in to the queens bedroom at buckingham palace, and went to the gallery and saw some Monet and van gough. Covent gardens is also great to spend some time watching street performers, some of them are really talented!
I also did the tower of London, coz i dont remember much from it last time. I must have gone at the right time of day, coz I saw changing of the guards at the queens residence in the main square, and then a similar thing at the gates with the lead beefeater. They also had a display of heaps of old armor, and like stuff from Henry the 8th which was absolutely massive, and then the next king...Edward?...the one that died young, his armor was tiny. Saw the crown jewels as well which was kinda cool, they're kept behind walls that literally weigh about 10 tons.
That night I went on the pub crawl, mostly just coz I didn't have anyone to go drinking with! There was a heap of Aussies and germans, and I made friends with some Americans and kiwis. It started off in covent gardens, with drink specials at each place, which is pretty important when drinking is as expensive as it is in London. Then we all got on the tube to ministry of sound which was crazy, metal detectors and bag checks on the door, there's a massive beer garden, then like 4 rooms and a balcony, and a MoS shop where you can buy CDs and merch.
On my last day I went up to Camden markets. They have so much vintage there it's awesome. I got a vintage leather clutch for £10 and a heap of jewelry, coz I figure I can fit that in my pack :D Manda and taz, I saw knee high docs for £199 in a nu roc store, so I don't think they're any cheaper... In the arvo I headed back in to town to go to the evensong so I could get in to Westminster Abby for free :) then went back to st james park to chill out and read my book. Was great atmosphere, there was a salvos band playing some big band stuff, which was really good to relax to.
I would make a nuneaton blog, but I spent most if the time sorting out my phone, national insurance and my bank account, which I'm still in the process of working out coz they're so slack fyi, which would probably bore you all.
Hung out with Lori and met some of her friends, and accidentally started a conga line one the way to the vat at an 80's club. Was nice to see bob and ange and loris fam, and meet joy and derrick, and have a nice dinner together. Good just to spend some time recharging my batteries and getting over that cold :)
So next I'll do a blog on the haggis tour when I can be bothered...depends how busy Glasgow keeps me!
