Well just a very quick entry to let you know that we are now in Nepal. Tis almost a relieve to be here, as the temperatures are more human! Tis around 27C during the day. Feels sp refreshing and the people are not so full on as the Indians. They dont pester you as much everywhere you go, but are still very friendly.
Was a very turbulant trip into Nepal. There seem to be a lot of air pockets over India. As soon as we took off we hit some fairly substantial turbulance for about 45 mins, and similarly about the same when we flew in to India from the Uk. We also had bit of a rough landing in Kathmandu as we came down through a thunderstorm. Some pretty bit stomach drops during that. We also seemed to come down onto the ground very fast on the runway, as there was some serious breaking happening and we def got to the end of the runway!!! But all in all we arrived safely and the pilots did a good job.
The drive from the aiport to the guesthouse in which are staying was interesting. There is currently a politcial strike in Nepal. Something about two political parties not agreeing about something. Anyway the end result is that no one in Nepal is currently working apart from the bare essentials, such as hospitals, police and airport staff, but even that is limited. They are having difficulty getting food into the country and delivered as there is no one working to deliver it. Thankfully the guesthouse we are in picked us up and have supplies of basic food such as rice and veg etc.
Kathamandu itself from what I saw from the drive here is a little bit like a small scale version of India, but slightly more built up and a bit cleaner. There are still lots of littel shanty huts and clearly marked poverty. The surrounding area looks lovely, with lots of hills. Our guest house is slightly out of the centre of Kathmandu just a little bit up in the hills. It gives us a great view over the city though and the staff are all very friendly and make you feel comfortable. Have just had here the best meal since I left the UK. Was very simple but tasted soo good. Was tomato soup with tibeten bread, boiled vegetables, hot lemon water and homemade hot rice pudding with nuts to finish. Fantabulous!
We have defintely made ourselves at home in our little room, starting off with our handwashing of many clothes. The dust in India means we have had to wwash our clothes every other day at least. Ed got bit of a shock when he come in to say hello to us in our room. It looked more like a lingerie with Charlotte and my underwear hanging about the place!!!Tomorrow morning we are going on a little trek with a local tour guide just a bit further up the hill and then some Kathmandu sight seeing in the afternoon.
So far Nepal gets the thumbs up!
