Well second day of the adventure. Day one was interesting, not the greatest start to the trip. Flight landed in Delhi ok and on time, but we had a mission just getting a taxi from the airport to the city centre and the bartering was fun! Trip from Airport to city centre was an experience (well just getting on any form of transport is an experience), as driving is bit of a free for all! There are no lanes, some traffic lights but not sure how these work as no one seems to pay any attention! Dogs dead and alive on side of the road, oh and a few goats, people everywhere, autorickshaws, cycling rickshaws taxis, building works everywhere, piles of rubble and the list goes on.
Many people live on the side of the street in tent like construction made fro m cloths, many dont even have that. We have had people with young children come asking for money to feed their child and people with missing limbs asking for money. Its hard not to give anything and to have to walk on by as though you dont care.
Our accomodation was a total mix up when we arrived. The place we had booked to stay in ahd no record of our stay until the next day, so there was no room available for us there until today. Our taxi driver from the airport took us to a little tourist office where they rang around and got us a room in a nearby hotel. We have no idea of where actually in Delhi this is, as all the streets have no names and all look the same! We also later found out from reading our guide book that our whole hotel situation was probably a total scam! They say that taxi drivers will often take tourists to local tourist offices and they ring the hotel you should be staying at to then tell you the room is not available (apparently they are actualy talking to someone next door on the phone!) and then they barter with to get you into one of their friends hotels! So basicallly we fell at our first hurdle! We have learnt a lot already though and are getting better at our bartering skills.
Later in the evening yesterday after chilling out in our dodgy hotel, we headed into the centre of Delhi, conaught place. We took the metro (so cheap and efficient) in the centre and ate some food at the International coffee house. We all felt a little bit better after some food and headed back in a local taxi (only a little bit of bartering involved as was a governamtn offical taxi) about 10.30pm back to the hotel.
Had little sleep last night as was so hot and the fans in the room were so loud! Today is looking up as we have transferred to the hotel we were supposed to be staying in and its a definite upgrade from where we were! We had a small breakfast on the roof of the hotel. Its so hot that its difficult to eat during the day. Today I actually thought I mgiht be starting a tan, however upon reflection I think this is more likely to be dirt! The soles of my feet are black! To we are aiming to head to the old part of Delhi and check out some of the sites, plus try out the autorickshaws
Well thats all from me for now, will update soon. And just for the record, you shake hands and eat with the right hand and the left is for......well I let you work that one out (rowan you know!)
