We have just spent the last three nights in Berkeley, California. This is a town in the San Francisco bay area and we have been enjoying the hospitality of my Granny's cousins (making the most of family ties). We arrived at Mike and Betty's (my relations) after another days driving, involving a quick tour through the wine producing areas in north California. Unfortunately neither of us could make the most of this as I am not yet 21 and so cannot drink or drive the rental car and Em had to drive. Still good fun.
We loved our stay with Mike and Betty for several reasons. Firstly they are lovely people and made us feel so welcome and looked after us very well. This meant we got fantastic food (especially when compared to the camping fare) and proper beds, which certainly beat roll mats and sleeping bags.
Secondly San Francisco and the bay area really is something. We had a drive around the city and the bay area, walked the Golden Gate bridge (it wasn't too foggy), wandered through the city and toured Alkatraz. It was such a shame to have to cram it all into 2 days and we could have quite easily spent as many weeks here and not seen it all.
Thirdly it was so good to see many family members that I had heard of, but never met. On our second night here we got to meet Sean and Jeffery (Mike and Betty's children), Jessica (Jeffery's wife) and Wendy (Jeff's daughter). This was a really fun evening.
We slept in late this morning, as we just have the comparatively short drive to Yosemite today. I have resolved to keep in touch with this branch of the family more and look forward to coming back some day.
