Franz Josef & Skydive!
On our way to Franz Josef on the Magic bus we had the opportunity to sign up to do a Skydive. We were going to do one in Taupo but the weather wasn't good enough, so what better place than over Fox Glacier. Matt was very nervous about doing it but once we arrived in Franz Josef and 'NZ skydive' had picked us up, there was no turning back!
We got kitted up in our very attractive jump suits but had a little wait before we could go as 2 other people were before us. The wait built up the nerves even more… Once we were ready to go the instructors made you feel at ease. Emily was surprisingly calm anyway, but Matt was a mess! We had a little training session before we jumped into the plane (a Cesna) and headed skyward! Matt wanted to go 1st as he thought he wouldn't do it if he was 2nd but unfortunately the instructors decided and Emily was 1st. We had a beautiful scenic flight over the glaciers, Mt Cook, the coast and rivers, although it was hard to take it in when you are about to jump out! The jump out went so quickly that you hardly noticed you had done it, and the 45s freefall was AMAZING!! It is so hard to explain as you have no falling sensation in you stomach even though you are travelling at 120mph. When the parachute opened (what a relief!) you got amazing views of the surrounding area. We both felt SO exhilarated when we landed as it is such an adrenalin rush! Such a FANTASTIC experience!! We would both def do it again (Matt is more of a maybe…ha ha).
Over the next few days in Franz Josef we weren't so lucky with the weather… rain, rain and more rain. Our glacier hike got cancelled so instead we made our own way to the bottom of the glacier and did a few walks of our own.
By pure coincidence Emily's friend Emily (Sergent) was in Franz Josef at the same time so we met up with them in the evening. They happened to be on the Magic bus as well and heading to Queenstown on the same day that we were…spooky stuff!
Next stop Queenstown on 13th March 08.
