First stop in the South Island: Picton – gateway to the Malborough Sounds, which we explored by hiring a small speedboat. Didn’t catch any fish, and Ben crashed the boat!
Then we drove round to Nelson to stay with our friends Tom and Becky in their fantastic house that Tom designed. The busy schedule consisted of the following:
- A heavy night on the town with our own personal rock-band playing to just us
- Extreme mountain biking with extreme hangovers
- A couple of BBQs in the sun with some local Maori friends
- Wine tasting, vineyards and Art gallery exploration (when faced with a selection of fine wines and asked which ones we wanted to try, Tom replied “start from the left and work your way along!”)
- Paddle-boarding (large surfboards that you stand on with a paddle)
- Wake-boarding around the Abel Tasman (again, exploring by speed-boat)
- Taking part in a crazy sailing race on a 35 foot yacht Thundercloud, followed by rum drinking with the local sailors
- Ben’s infamous Moroccan stew
- Plenty of expensive Pinot Noir
It’s what you call back-packing in style!!!
The adventures aren’t over yet – this weekend is surfing road trip to Kaikoura…
