We arrived in the morning to Ica and it was baking hot. I was feeling really ill again and so when we got there, we headed straight to the little oasis of Huacacina, 5km out of town. We splashed out 8 pounds for a private room, which was a bit like a prison -basic but comfortable and I went back to sleep until lunchtime. Huacania is tiny, it has a lagoon and a few streets and that's it, it really is a proper oasis in the desert . We went back into Ica that evening to get some money and had some very basic food. We then got a tuk tuk back to Huacacina, which went at about 2 miles an hour.
The next day we arranged to go on a sandbuggy tour and sandboarding, the reason we'd come to Ica in the first place. It was definitely worth the trip up there. The sandbuggy driver takes you right up into the dunes and drives fast up and over these huge dunes, it's better than a theme park! I was sat in the front next to the driver and as there was so little room I had to sit with the gearstick between my legs. Kate kept laughing every time the driver went to change gear. Next we stopped in the middle of the desert, waxed our sandboards with candles, strapped them on and went down. I can honestly say it is nothing like snowboarding and turned out to be much more fun and faster to go down on the board on your stomach -even the pro boarder in the group did the same. It was brilliant fun and also quite a workout as it wasn't easy walking from one sand dune up to the next, there were no bubble lifts here. We were absolutely covered in sand when we got back and were shattered so definitely ready to get on the coach to Arequiba and have a good sleep.
