Right so, Christmas on Fraser Island!!!!! I have to say it was the most surreal Christmas I've ever had! It was soo fun and different being on a sandy island but of course, i missed home. Especially when my christmas dinner was pasta and beans!! (lucky i had the best christmas dinner before i came out! Thanks Mum!! xxx)
Ill start from the beginning of the trip. We all left on the 23rd December in our 4x4 trucks. There were 4 trucks all leaving from beaches. In our truck there was Me & Sophie, a boy and girl from Scotland called Adam and Laura, and a group of 3 girls and 1 boy (Sarah, Claire, Gabi and Sam). Unfortunatly Adam and the group of four didn't click very well and soon there were snidy remarks being thrown around. But the rest of us all got on fine and we headed out on the sandy and extremely bumpy roads of Fraser Island!
Adam was the first to drive and he handled it very well, i felt very safe even though we were all being thrown around the back of the truck! It was so much fun!! About and hour in we came to a tight bend in the road that everyone was getting stuck in because of the loose sand, so we all had to get out of the truck and let adam drive through and up the track. This is when my near death experience occured! So we were all walking up the track to meet adam (who must have driven MILES before he stopped and waited for us to catch up!) when an aussie with a pick up truck drove past and offered us a lift. We all jumped at the chance, as it was sooo hot! So everyone climbed in until it was just me and sam left, so sam being the gentleman let me get in next when suddenly the guy driving started to move!!!!!!!! I was half in the truck and before i knew it i was lying on my back on the track and the car was moving off without me! Then i heard alot of screaming and shouting for him to stop, but i just jumped straight back up and started laughing. It was so funny, everyone looked as though they were about to cry but i wasn't hurt so it was fine. Although i did lose my sunglasses in the fall :(. So anyway, i managed to get back into the truck without hurling myself out and we made it to Adam without anymore accidents. Our first stop was Lake Mackenzie. WOW. It has to be the most beautiful place i've ever seen. White sands, clear blue fresh water, blue skys, it was just amazing! We spent about 3 hours there swimming and sunbathing before leaving feeling cleaner that when we'd arrived (apparently it cleans you because the waters so fresh!) and made our way to the campsite. We had to drive on the Beach to get there which can be quite dangerous due to washouts (or wipeouts as we kept calling them, for some reason) and soft sand, but we made it safely and just in time to put up our tent before the sun set. We decided to only put one tent up and try to fit 8 people in, which didn't work. That night we made our dinner and sat around the campfire with the other people and started drinking. The camp we were staying on was run by a tribe of Aboriginals and they gave us two rules which we had to obey. No whistleing after dark as it scares away the spirits, and no spitting in the fire as its disrespectful to the spirits that they have summond.
So the first night was spent drinking and getting to know everyone, and this is when we met the group of people who we end up travelling up the coast with. So the group consists of Adam and Royston, two guys from Wales, Matt whos from the Isle of Man, Toni, a girl from Plymouth, Will, a guy from Ascot, Rach who's from Sale, Chris, from Newcastle and Hannah from Northampton. Everyone was really lovely and we all sat around the camp fire till the morning.
So the next day, Christmas Eve, we started the long drive to India Heads which is a cliff top that looks over Fraser Island coast and out to sea. It was a beautiful view. Sometimes if your lucky you can see sharks, turtles and stingers in the water below, but i didn't see anything. Apparently some of the others saw a hammerhead shark but that must have been after i'd gone. We spent about an hour there, then started on the long walk along the beach to the Champagne Pools. Their called the Champagne pools because they are reef like pools on the side of the mainland so when the waves come in, they crash on the side of the reef and make big splashes and bubbles in the pools. We stayed there for a couple of hours then made our way back to camp. So as it was Christmas Eve, the Aboriginals put on a Traditional dance for us around the camp after dinner. The performed 3 songs for us with the children dancing, and then after they painted our faces to match theirs. Then their was alot of drinking and singing christmas songs until Midnight and then, to be honest, i dont really remember alot after that!!! A good night had though!
So the next morning was Christmas Day!! Sophie and I had bought eachother presents so we opened them at breakfast. Sophie had got me an anklet and and braclet, and i had put money towards a dress she had seen in Hervey Bay. We also had party hats and crackers, but we were saving them till dinner! So after pancakes for breakfast we all headed out to Lake Wabby. Lake Wabby is about 2k inland, which with a hangover on a boiling hot sunny day is a very VERY long way! Its a big GREEN lake, apparently there is alot of tea tree in the water which makes it very green, there was also alot of turtles floating about which was cool as you got to swim along side them!!!!!!!!!! We spent about 2 hours there before moving on to the shipwreck. Now i wish i could tell you some interesting fact about the wreck, but i cant. All i know is that its massive, in two parts and your not allowed on it... But as far as shipwrecks go its the best ive seen!!!!!
So then we headed back to camp to start on our amazing christmas dinner. When i say amazing i am lying.. i had pasta, beans and cheese. Not a patch on turkey i have to say! After that we all pulled our crackers and started celebrating christmas!! The night is a bit of a blur after that but i can tell you it involved alot of drinking games and was a brilliant night! The next morning i was not feeling so brilliant!!! We had to be up at 5.30 to take down our tents and pack up our things to head back to the main land and the bumpy ride home did not help at all!!!
So after we had got back to Hervey Bay and checked back into the rooms i went for a mammoth sleep! I had such a good time on Fraser, it was one of the best experiences ever and made a very different Christmas!!! I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas, and thank you all so much for the money you gave me, I put it all together and did a 14000ft skydive!!!!!!!!! Miss you all lots xxxxxxx
