We woke up today not expecting much from Bern to be honest! But we had an amazing day. Our hotel was right in the centre and was a 5 minute walk from the Old Town, a UNESCO world heritage site. The roads are gorgeous with tall terraced buildings, and shops and bars underground. We walked along the road and saw Einsteins house! We carried on downhill and came to the Aare, the river flowing through Bern. It was about 36 degrees and people were jumping off the bridge and swimming in it. It was.a bright blue colour and was absolutely stunning. I wanted to go to the 'Rosengarten', a park filled with different colours and varieties of roses, so we headed there.
What I didn't realise was that the Rosengarten was on the top of a very steep hill that we had to climb. It was a very sharp incline that we walked for over an hour to get there (it took us 20 minutes to get back though!). By the time we got to the top and saw a restaurant we were panting thirsty and hungry. Breakfast at the hotel was rubbish and we had only had an apple each. The terrace of the restaurant overlooked all of Bern and it was an amazing view. We sat and ordered lunch (which came to 100CHF!!!!). I had the best Caesar salad I've ever had, and Paul had cold roast beef and chips. Then we had a banana sundae which was especially nice because of how hot it was. We sat at our table for about an hour and a half looking at the view and enjoying our food. Then we went to the Rosengarten and sat under a big tree for another hour or so just listening to music and relaxing our legs.
We walked back to the hotel at around 5/6 and that was all!! We got to see a lot of Bern for free and that was brilliant. We wanted to do more but even a museum entry was 30CHF and it just wasn't worth it. Italy tomorrow!
